All but one of my guitars has been purchased online from various guitar shops (not individuals) and I've yet to have a negative experience. Some of them needed a good setup, but that's likely to be true regardless of where you buy the guitar.
Just use some common sense and ask questions before you buy. You'll probably be just fine.
