I have one, and a lot of what you are paying for is what might be termed the "heirloom craftsmanship" element i.e. cosmetic refinement. I've played many a Strat of more lowly birth that played at least as well, and in some cases better than my (and other) Customs sampled.
If you have the money, consider it. If not, don't sweat it.
