Opinion - Peavey Valve King Royal 8.

I have a Strat with fairly low output single coils. I am thinking of buying a Peavey Valve King Royal 8 to play with at home.

I just wondered what people think of it. Would I be better off with a Fender Champ 600?

Never having played a Peavey Valve King, I cannot comment on that particular amp. I have played a Peavey Classic 30, and while it was a nice amp, my impression was that it was more about preamp breakup, than power tube breakup. It sounded nice, but it didn't have that Fender thing going enough for me.

I have played a Super Champ XD. It's a mighty nice little amp. I'm seriously contemplating getting one for home use, though it's still a pretty loud little bugger. You might even consider a Vibro Champ XD. But, that's really if you like the Fender sound.

Currently I own a Deluxe Reverb Reissue and a Line 6 Spider II. I rarely turn the Line6 on. I love my DR enough that I will forgo the other amp completely. I would almost rather play unplugged... I have considered the Vibro and Super Champ Xd's for a little while now. The price is not painful and they would also work for small gigs or a gig where you could mic your amp.

If you're looking for something with EL84's or a solid state amp... my follow up on someone else's suggestion ain't gonna help ya much!

I have the Valveking 212, and if you like metal, you'll probably like the VK Series.

I have to confess I first bought it for its price, which is reasonable for its power, and the fact that its a tube amp. It sounds pretty good, too. Better than most solid-states in the same price range. The 212 is loud as all-get-out, and I use it for outdoor shows where we don't have a large PA or soundman, to help project the sound.

It is not the amp I record with, nor is it the amp I bring to shows where we have a good PA setup and soundman. I use my Traynor Custom Valve 50 (which is an AWESOME amp, Canadian made... some vintage buyers consider old Traynors to rival and even surpass the tone and quality of old Fenders and Marshalls; though that is just opinion).

I say give the VK a spin if you're into high gain. It has more than you'll probably need. If you're interested in cleaner tones, the Fender would suit you better.
