SCXD and PRRI side by side video

Made a vid comparing the cleans:

Which sounds better to you?

BTW, I biased the SCXD which was way cold from factory and put in a new speaker (same Jensen that is the PRRI) -

SCXD - clean tone same as PRRI (well, 95% there), multiple voicings, slightly more smaller sounding, made in china - $279

PRRI - better reverb, bigger sound, no distortion channels, USA made. - $849

To me, these two sound identical side by side and that amazed me. The SCXD is a great little amp!

I totally agree. The Super Champ does sound slightly smaller but otherwise they sound the same.

Yes, the sound similar.

I'd like to hear them both cranked all the way up to see how they compare then.

ok i was pricing some amps tonight i dont know if i can say where so i wont...but the PRRI was $899 and the SCXD was $329...by the sound comparison made by Steve im willing to pay the $329 vs his $279...with a whopping almost $600 dollars in savings over the PRRI...not to mention i am considering the DRRI for $50 more over the PRRI

i am very interested in the full volume test...i cant wait

I have experience with both amps. The SCXD is a great deal. Really super for the price. The Princeton is a keeper amp. The kind you buy and keep for a long time. Plus, if you change out the PR's 10" speaker with a 12" you'll be shocked at how big and how good it sounds.

I also have owned a DRRI and I'd still take the PR over the DRRI even though the price is close. But if cost is an issue, and it usually is the SCXD is a fantastic value.

PS. I've also owned a HRD and the PR wins hands down.

Steve,

You put in a new speaker (same as from the PRRI). While I'm guessing you had a spare lying around(?), what would you estimate the cost of that speaker as? Just trying to compare dollars to dollars.

Also, I'm guessing that since you replaced the speaker, you didn't like the comparison stock?

EDIT: ok I see that the PRRI has a Jensen C10R which runs about $40. So still a superb deal!

To me the TONE is identical, the difference I hear is in the size of the cabinet , the PRRI seems to have more gain .
How did you adjust the Bias on the SCXD?

Aww, dang, you removed this video! I wanted to watch it again; both amps are on my radar for different reasons.

Hey Pat this is Aaron, who bought your strat. I got the SCXD about 3 months ago and I love it. I would definetly buy it over the PRRI for many reasons: price, multiple gain settings and more FX. I was thinking of getting a DRRI though soon but don't know if it is too loud for my uses. I need to find one and play with it.

Hey Aaron!

I've played a co-worker's SCXD a bit, but found that I didn't really like most of the gain-based voices; most of what I like to play starts out on clean, and uses pedals for dirt. But the SC is definitely a flexible beast, and cheap! Can't beat either of those things.

Yeah I didn't really like channel two either. I have pedals for that but the Clean channel is good. I think the SCXD is great. It is good for me for the time being but I hope to get a DRRI soon. Your CV Strat is amazing! I play it everyday for hours. I like it so much that I have decided when the funds approve to buy the 60s version, for the RW fretboard.
