Paddy Burgin lives in Wellington and makes Weissenborn guitars (amongst other instruments). Some of his instruments are played by David Lindley and Henry Kaiser.
I would love to eventually have one of these myself but last year I asked him to build me a one off solid body lap steel as I found that this would be more practical for my use with a full blown electric band where feeback from a hollow bodied instrument would have been an issue.
He found a piece of nicely grained ash in his workshop and some Australian hardwood for the fretboard and made this one of a kind for me. It has a specially wound lipstick pickup which has a nicely dark tone which complements the brighter tone of the ash body.
I play it regularly with my band and am absolutely delighted with it and always get good comments about it from other guitar geeks - and occasionally from the other punters as well!!!
It's a keeper and will eventually be a family heirloom to be handed down to my son but in the meantime I intend to make full use of it and play it as much as possible!
