Pedal Prices?

Beyond quality of manufacture, why are some pedals more expensive than others? I'm not talking about the difference between boutique pedals and mass produced ones, but rather why are pedals like overdrive and distortion generally less expensive than delay and reverb?

Is it the engineering or design work that goes into more expensive pedals? Is it the kind of components? Is it the number of components? Is it the difficulty of manufacture? What is it?

Just a guess, but OD and distortion pedals use cheap OpAmps and clipping diodes, and reverb and delay pedals use more expensive DSP chips....

Maybe?

Maybe, but even analog delays are more expensive than overdrive and distortion type. DSP chips are digital so they wouldn't be in an analog delay or chorus type pedal.

Reverb/delay would be a lot more complicated, wouldn't they? The dist/overdrive simply boosts, then clips. Everything else is a lot more complicated...

It's all of the above, really. Some of the chips can be expensive, and if you look in a delay or reverb there will be multiple chips. The total parts count is usually way higher too. Open up a chorus pedal and compare the parts count to a clean boost. That adds to the complexity of the design process and the length of time it takes to manufacture, particularly if they're made by hand.
