Why no threads about compressors??
Every other forum has masses of threads on the merits of compressors - why not here??
Has everyone been compressed out??
I'll start by claiming that the Barber Tone Press is the best one out - ever!! So tranparent but can still squash with the best of them.
I've tried all sorts of compressors over the years and never quite liked them for long but the Barber really is fantastic.

My two favs are the old 1980 Ibanez CP-9 and the script logo MXR. I have both and like 'em both. I've tried others and never have found one I like more. A newer block logo MXR came pretty close.
I'm a sucker for the "old" pedals, hey I'm an old guy.

The whole world is your vintage market. Not just what's available locally. But I bought my 1980 CP-9 in 1980 and the script logo MXR I got in Eugene, Or. I was there on business and visited a very cool guitar store.. McKenzie River Music ( http://mckenzierivermusic.com/). I was hanging around, playing some very cool old guitars and asked if he had a Script Logo MXR. He went in the back and brought out a big box full of pedals and sure enough one was in there.
I got my Block Logo MXR at the Austin Guitar show.
You just got to get out there and LOOK!

So, if you have more than 1 compressor do you ever set them both up for different sounds?
I've got an older Marshall 'Ed the compressor' pedal as well and was wondering whether I should set up the Barber so that I could have it on all the time just to fatten/sweeten up the tone and then have the Marshall for the traditional heavier comp tones.
I'm not a great fan of overdriven tones and prefer to hear just 'beefier' clean tones - think Clapton's mid boost type tone - just on the verge of breaking up but not quite there but still with enough meat to sound good.
Does anyone use their compressors in this way and are there any benefits either way?

I also like the MXR as well as a Keeley I tried. Let me ask where in your pedal lineup are you placing compressor?

Big fan here. I always use one. I have a Maxon CP-101, Keeley, and my original Boss CE-2. I have owned the Boss DE-3 and an Analogman dual, but I didn't like those. I'm looking for quiet with a no tone loss.

The BBE Opto Stomp is an optical compressor I leave on all the time. Nice smooth compression, very quiet. Only 2 concerns - doesn't do really tight sqeezed compression by itself (but pretty good with modern tube amps) and the volume has to be run wide open. To make the pedal volume neutral I run it full volume with the compression turned to roughly 80%. With that I get a nice clean sound that works well switching from lead to rhythm
