Not to be pedantic but they used two (!) studio compressors on his Rick! No wonder a live reproduction by McGuinn or anyone else was so difficult!
I have a Janglebox as well and it's been one of the top 1 or 2 gear purchases I've made. Getting a good Rick sound without it is an exercise in futility from REM to the Raspberries to the Byrds (natch). I have taken to using it with my EJ Strat especially on countryish parts where it helps get a bit of Tele tone when necessary.
The McGuinn Ricks are nice (and rare) but paying strictly to get an onboard compressor is very expensive!
The bloke who makes the JB has struck a deal with an overseas manufacturer (in China no doubt) to get them down in price point so he can sell them through the mom and pops. Different paint job, slightly different electronics. In the meantime the Janglebox 2 is out and is very tempting!
Delivery of my JB was delayed by several weeks due to production backlog. It's a bit quirky - the entire base plate (back of box) must be removed to get to the battery. In addition, the AC connector is center pin positive and 99% of pedals and adapters are pin negative including the supply from my Furman pedalboard! By sheer luck I found a 1 Spot adapter/connector that reversed polarity was intended to make the 1 Spot compatible with Yamaha keyboards but hey presto it worked with the Janglebox! $2.65 and problem solved!
I'm still eager to try a Keeley compressor if only for comparison.
