German Umlaut in my user name

Hi, it seems that the display of the "ü" works everywhere except in forum overviews when there's an old thread where I posted last. New postings like this one show the umlaut. And otherwise the new software looks good.

Oh no, forgot one thing: all subscriptions from the old software are lost, I had to resubscribe to all old threads manually, but this can be done quite easily when searching for your own user name. And the setting for instant email notification was also reverted back to "no notification".

Last but not least: images in signatures are not allowed anymore, but I think I can survive without them. ;)

Hey Hans,
Blame the Umlaut on MySQL's coalition woes. The old PHPBB software was a mixture of UTF8 and Latin1 swedish_ci and it confounded me at every turn. Seems that MySQL was coded by Swedish folks, so when the new version of MySQL was introduced with language "coalition" they chose Swedish as the default language. Ha, Ha, very cute.

So, when you install or upgrade to MySQL 4 or higher if you don't tell it to do otherwise it puts Swedish in the database language. This is fine but previously UTF8 was standard. So, when I imported my phpbb I got a mixture of languages and mostly UTF8 which precluded the Umlaut.

You were the only user with such a Character, but I reran the import one extra time to make things work with your name. Unfortunately it hasn't seemed to fix it everywhere, just most places.

Hmmm, photos in sigs not allowed? That's not intentional I'll work on that.

I'm not surprised that the import did not import subscriptions. But mostly it's gone without any major problems. And, it saves me about 5 hours a week now that I don't have to fight off the spambots from autoregistering 15 new registrations a day.

Thanks

Hans,

I think you just can't use HTML in the signature to display an image. BBCODE works. I just tried it.

UPDATE: No, it was more than that. I had permission but others didn't. I fixed it.

Thanks!

As it only happens in overviews of old threads where I posted last (e.g. when I look at all my subscribed threads), it's not very important, I only wanted to mention it.

I'm trying to upload a signature image from my computer at the moment, but keep getting an error back that the server doesn't respond after clicking on "submit reply" or "preview post". I'll try to use the option with the URL to my homepage where I have uploaded that picture, too.

OK, seems to work, thank you!

That alone is probably worth the update. ;)
