Hello from Derby UK
Hi all.
I'm new to Strat Talk, sort of new to guitar too.
Played a little when I was a teenager but that was a long time ago now.
Bought my Strat in November last year and have started trying to remember the few things i'd learnt all those years ago. Work takes up 60hrs per week so practice time is limited but I'm really enjoying it. Always had a Strat copy when I was a kid as money was always tight, it was a Satellite in two tone sunburst like the '54 model. Always dreamed of having a genuine American Strat one day and now I have one, an American Standard in Candy Cola, (metallic Red), with a Maple neck, love it.
I always believe that if you want to improve at anything, you've got to work/play with people who are better than you are. So, if there's anyone out there within a reasonable distance of Derby who can spare some time to teach an old dog a few new tricks, I'd be interested.
Regards to all,
Sultan.

It's a long, wet slog from my house to yours so I can't stop by for a visit, but I can maybe offer some advice since I'm in just about the exact same situation as you--learned a few chords and the intro to Stairway to Heaven as a teenager, then picked up a guitar and started learning to play right around last Novemeber. I've made a lot of mistakes so far, but I think I've identified a couple of things I did right.
#1: Found a good teacher and started taking lessons. If I'd had the teacher I have now instead of the mean-spirited, miserable church lady who strangled all the fun out of trying to learn guitar back in the 1970s, I believe I would have learned to play back then.
#2: Carved out 1/2 hour per day where I can practice guitar in peace. I get up half an hour earlier than I used to and now when my wife leaves for work I have a half hour where I can crank up the amp and make as much noise as I want before I have to leave for work.
As a result of this, I've learned to play guitar much more proficiently than I ever expected. I'm still genuinely not good, to put it kindly, but I had pretty low expectations.

The most important thing is to have fun!
Not many of us will become Van Halens, Claptons or Vaughans.....but we can have a f***ing great time playing music......alone, or in a band.

Hi to you too.
Stay in touch you never know, I may take a run down one weekend. I do about 250 miles per day through work so 35 isn't a problem. I know the A38, A5, M6 Toll area pretty well.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm in the process of finding a tutor at the moment. I find some of the on-line lessons useful but it's nothing like playing along with another player sat right next to you. I'm up to speed on most common chords, both open and bar, and my lead is coming on too. However, I feel a little like i'm plateauing a bit and need a bit of a kick forward. I love blues and rock and want to develop that area if my playing.

Welcome aboard Sultan! Great advice from Lobotomy Boy, direction from a good instructor gets you where you want to be much quicker and isolate practice (work) from playing for pleasure. See ya around.
Cheers!
