This generation of music and teens....
The other day I thought I would wear my Led Zepplin T-Shirt to my high school. From entering the building I was promptly asked about my shirt. I was asked about 7 times who and what was Led Zepplin. Honestly though, I am not suprised. Most kids these days don't know who Eric Clapton is, the beatles, or Led Zepplin and a many others. Now kids know, 50 Cent, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Puff daddy.
Anyway i'm just having a little rant about how there is no real good music anymore. It has been lost in generations, and rap is now on almost every radio station. Is there any real good music out there and I am just not looking in the right spot? Or do you agree with me in saying that most music now is very bland and the art of rock has been lost?
So yeah.

I think there is good music to be had but you have to search it out. Chances are you won't hear it on the radio and definitely not on TV.

Ruff .... commercial music has steered this way for some time. Try satellite radio, has genres for your tastes. I personnally don't look for bands in the newer music, just songs that appeal to me. Try SoundClick - Free MP3 music download ...ch, much more. this is all people or bands who are making current music who are not on the radio. Check the charts section and you'll find tons of stuff just waiting for your approval. You can load them on your own radio station on your homepage there. Enjoy~!

i personal lost all taste for rap music a while ago and quickly realized that rock and blues jazz...even classical have more of a reason for existing that is deeper than money...and the performances are much better the artist actually know the words and the band knows the notes...(jimi, the beatles, Led Zepplin, Eric Clapton,Louis Armstrong, miles davis, john coltrane, dizzy gillespies, yiruma etc.) basically i hate all "hip hop" "rap" so their is hope for our youth still

there is very good music out there, you just won't hear it on the radio. They just repeat the same songs over and over.
In the past few days every single time I get in the car the radio is playing the same Offspring song. Like six times now. At first I thought, "what are the odds?" then I realized it's just because they keep playing the same playlist.

I like a little bit of the new music, but it is not 50cent or that other crap. There is some new rock that is ok. I am on a country kick lately but it has to be rocking chicken pickn tele slappin country. Brad Paisley is very good. I believe he is the closest we have to a guitar hero now days.

I'd bet none of the kids that asked you who Led Zep was were in band. They may seem like a bunch of geeks right now, but those are the kids you want to be hanging out with if you're into music.
And those flute playing girls.....

there's a lot of good younger rock bands. are there any great ones? bands that will take their place with giants like the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, the Who, Pink FLoyd, etc? i really don't think so. that time in rock's history has passed.
but there are bands that can play their instruments, can write good solid songs with hooks, and pen some respectable lyrics. some are in England (the Kooks, Arctic Monkeys), some are in France (Phoenix), and some are in the US (TV On The Radio, White Stripes).
i'm exhausted right now, so i'm sure there's some other really good bands i'm forgetting at the moment. but as good as the bands might be, i sincerely doubt they'll produce albums that can stand with those of the giants of yesteryear.

Yo don't hate on Eminem or Rap for that matter (You can still hate on Weezy and 50, cuz I don't they're way overrated )
The genre isn't bad, it's not as easy as people may think to spit rhymes or to come up with a good beat... you need some amazing sense of rhythm to actually come up with good stuff. Listen to Nas, Atmosphere, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots... I could go on and on about how amazing those artists are... they just don't get as much attention from the media as they should.
The same with rock bands these days... the bands that make it to the top of the charts don't necessarily have the best material... think Daughtry, The Killers, Seether, Hoobastank... etc They all suck IMO... The ones that make some good music don't really get the attention of the media, hence the general masses who are not music buffs have never heard of them to begin with.
All genres are victims of media manipulation, and unless you're into listening to music... you're not gonna seek out anything outside of the top 50.
P.S. Eminem had put some really amazing and groundbreaking works towards the beginning of his musical career... I think when Encore came out (even though it had some good songs) his material just went downhill quality wise

no no, you mis-read what I wrote. I didn't mean in A band, I meant band, as in "band class". Maybe they don't have that anymore because the schools need more money for the three "r's"; readin', ritin, and rithmatic.
Don't get me started on pudlik ejikashin and the parents role in child rearing.

Motograter and Lamb of God if you're into the heavy stuff, is pretty awesome. And Megadeth just put out a new cd too.

+1 agree!!
I don't think music today is bad. Rap and hip-hop aren't bad. It's just whatever makes people dance and jump around. I don't think you need to know and love all the great bands from back in the day and dismiss all the current bands in order to have 'good taste'.
There are some really nice bands nowadays that play with some pretty intense grooves, even popular bands, e.g. The Kills and even Janelle Monae.. that girl's backing band is awesome, and she dances like Mick Jagger!

I liked the last Lemonheads release because it had my boys from All/Descendents doing drums and bass along with Evan Dando. I'm out of touch with popular new music. I know Muse is big.

The Rock Show is Lost or just in Hibernation
I personally think, there are not as many young kids looking to play piano anymore, makeing it genrally hard to get a keyboard/piano player in a group.
Most kids pick up the guitar, becuase its fun, and cheap to get started
Also, Technology is effecting music directly. Computers can do alot, solo artist can thrive on looping, as well as full bands. Djs can mix with ease and focus on other effects.
i think Rock and Roll as we know it is dead, there are a few bands still holding trying to hold on to the gold old days, but music is an everychangeing stream that is passed from one generation to the next, with each generation learning from what the last generation has accomplished.
I think we were all arware of the 90s grunge and alternitive scene, the 2000s was a new level of rap artists, pop artist, and rock artist, now whats next? the turn of a new generation of music, 2010, and the music scence is begging for a new act.
I think its going to be a new style that pretty much fuses rap and rock into one by useing new technology, and midi keyboards and sounds. As well as live instruments and a full band.

Im gonna put my head on the chopping block and say that I dont like California by Alice in Chains. Im sorry I just dont like it. There are some good bands out there and there are still good songs being made by modern bands but you probably wont hear them on the radio, you have to buy the cd, think of them as the B-side songs. And everybody can knock rap all they want but the ones who are really good at it have verbal skills that would make English teachers jealous. Im not sayin they are all good or original but some of them can come up with a poetic verse on the spot and I respect that.

not a big fan of AiC's 'California' either, there's 4 songs on the new cd that sound like that one. Very generic AiC sound. The sound without the passion.
Plus a Seattle band singing about California just pisses me off for some reason, lol.

there is not another instrument that can produce the pianos sound, if you do not have one in the band, then you do not have that sound, simple as that. im just saying its pretty easy to find a decent guitar player, but how easy is it to find even a good piano player. piano adds a missing chunk that alot of todays bands just dont posses. please define cool?

Most kids these days are truely without hope. From what I've witnessed, if they can't fit it into a 170 character text message, they aren't interested in reading it or writing it. Learning seems to be looked down upon. Knowledge is a waste of time and smart people are a laughing matter. Honestly, I think if you were born after 1990, you whould be placed in a prison camp and be forced to learn about history, math, and science. And they should be forced to learn about music back when it was played on instruments. Maybe mix in a lesson about how pants and a belt are to be worn.

yeeeah.
Keyboard's still not cool. I can play piano,....it's still not cool.
course it's all opinion anyway. The Doors wouldn't be the same without keyboards, but that's probably the only group I'd miss if rock bands didn't use keyboards.
And the Key'tar that was around in the 80's? *groan* the absolute HEIGHT of "not cool."

I stated kicking my 13 year old nephew in the butt everytime his pants are slung down so far that I can see it. Not just ali'l love tap, but a full on, lift his feet off the ground, fall on his face, kick in butt. Now he pulls up his pants anytime he thinks he "might" see me. works like a charm.
Now if I can just convince parents to let me do it to to THEIR kids, it might make a difference.

HA! This is about as bad as it gets.
Lyrics
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
If you ask us how we want it, we'll say man-to-man. When you go to kiss our cheeks we're gonna
put out our hands because (all night!) we've been talking to liars. And it's (all right!) just
not in the style of tigers.
And if you ask us what we're doing we'll say, "It doesn't matter to you". All you need to know
is we love to see the crowd move.
So turn it up! It really isn't loud enough. When we say when, we know you'll think it's too
much.
So what?
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
So what?
It's just a joke, man, it's just an interview.
So what?
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
So what?
You'll never get it, I guess this **** is too new.
Now let's synchronize our movements ‘til they're super sick. We got high hats and loud claps in
every mix.. We're like boys, just ask her, dicks done by C.P. Caster. Hey, look out, you're still
in slip mode! Thanks, but now I'm in batch capture.
And if you ask us why we're laughing we'll say, "It doesn't matter to you". All you need to know
is we love to see the crowd move.
So turn it up! It really isn't loud enough. When we say when, we know you'll think it's too much.
So what?

Headphones and velcro and pictures of Mars.
(So what?)
New mics and dirt bikes and candy bars.
(So what?)
Bowties and sneakers while making beats
(So what?)
Hard-drives and handbooks and hotel sheets
So What?
It doesn't matter to you.
So What?
It doesn't matter to you.
So What?
It doesn't matter to you.
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
So what?
I do it every night.
She does it in her man suit.
So what?
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.
So what?
We never said it; you know we always wanted to
So what..
So what?
So what?
So What?
Nanny nanny, nanny nanny boo boo.

Just because we get around (Talkin' 'bout my generation)

This is my generation
This is my generation, baby
Why don't you all f-fade away (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
And don't try to dig what we all s-s-say (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
I'm not trying to cause a big s-s-sensation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)
I'm just talkin' 'bout my g-g-g-generation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)

music goes thru changes, kids. be thankful if you never experienced the drivel that led to the need for the invention of punk-- disco, 10CC, foreigner, journey... as long as Iggy Pop is still here, there is always hope for Music.

There are lots of good, great and terrible bands from every era. Not every band was great in the 60's and 70's and there was some terrible music then too. A quick Google search proves this with horrid songs like Sugar Sugar topping the charts in '69. If you are one of those who is trapped in the past and chooses to focus all of your attention on bands like Led Zeppelin you are missing out on the great bands of today, like Wilco, Drive By Truckers.
