Too many guitars
Who else Here is or has been a working musician. The reason i say that is this.At the moment im Without my strat it's gone in for some tlc and a fret redress. I personaly think that a working guitar player has an average of 4 guitars at any one time and they all get played. and too many people have too many great guitars that don't get played enough,am i wrong thinking that guitars are beautiful tools for expression and should not be put away and kept pristine for value. maybe im just missing my girl. lol

Not too many, you need one more for the stable. Tell yourself this periodically.

I'm only a 'part-time working musician' (I kept my day job). I get frustrated that I can't give enough time to all of my guitars. One of the big issues is keeping fresh strings on all those guitars. I usually choose 2 that are 'active' at a time so that each gets to live out a set of strings before going back into the vault.
I felt that I needed all the essential guitar options. I'm content with these:
Strat & Tele - trem and hard tail
LP & SG - 22 fret and 24 fret
an acoustic
those 4 electrics also cover single coil and humbucker as well as the two 'big brands'.
Now that I've rambled a bit, I realise how right you are, lesray. I guess that, since I'm only 'part-time', I only play 2 of the 4 at any given time. Right now I'm on my Gilmour Strat (build) and my Zoot Suit SG. Next go around I'll probably bring up my MIA HSS and my Nashville Tele.
I have a few other Strats ('cause they're awesome) but I would say that, with most of the options covered, I have the tools to express, or create, the music that's in my head.
I don't see anything wrong with collecting guitars, though, they ARE works of art and hanging on a wall is still "expression".

Too many guitars! you've been talking to my wife again!I guess your next line will be"You spend more time working on your guitars than playing them"or "You can only play them one at time,so why so many? There's no such thing as too many guitars!!

I'm a working guitarist but I only own 2 electrics and a beater acoustic. There's also a stray electric that someone's left here but he hasn't picked it up in over 6 months.
I've been trying to talk a guy into trading one of his many electrics to me for some lessons, he gave me an amplifier for some lessons once, but I notice out of his stable of guitars he's got one of those Zakk Wylde Epiphones with the EMG pickups and I keep thinking that guitar would make a great tool for recording with. (I'd never want to be seen in public with that thing, lol)
I definitely want a few more guitars though, and since I started recording for myself I find myself wanting guitars that I have no interest in (like the LP) just because I want to have the option of recording that sound.
Can't really imagine owning more then say 6-8 guitars though, that's just too much for me. Too much upkeep and just too many guitars in general. I couldn't give all of them the attention they'd deserve.
But the thought of my dining room looking like a guitar store is a pretty tempting and cool thought, lol.

Every guitar fan should have at least one: Strat, Tele, LP (or similar), a P90 guitar, an EMG guitar, Bass, Acoustic, Auc/Elec, Shredder, and a Semi-Hollow. Throw in a couple-or-three amps, some pedals You'll also need something to jam with-even if it's just a disc player (a band is better!). That's not too many, just about right.

I have 4 guitars(3 elect, 1 acoustic), 2 amps and 13 pedals(for now). I play everything listed everyday! I work near my home and go home for lunch everyday, so I get an hour there. I still think I need to add a LP and a Tele to the stable. The upkeep is a booger too. I easily spend $50 a month on strings alone.

I beat you all, having only one guitar and one amp. I think I'd do fine with a maximum of 3 guitars, anything over 3 would be WAY too much. An electric guitar is a pretty versatile instrument, I'm pretty damn sure you can get any sound you need from 3 guitars and a couple of amps. I have to admit I've been playing frantically for the last week, and now I'm suddenly out of inspiration... bah, I need some fresh perspective, will try again next week. Good night folks.

I have a lot. I try not to duplicate, and I try to fill a need.
An SSS Fender Strat (Surf, Buddy Holly, etc.)
an HSS Fender Strat (EVH/IronMaiden etc.)
an HSS Axl Strat that is currently in Nashville Tuning.
a Danelectro Baritone
A Fender Stratacoustic (My main acoustic)
A Peerless small body acoustic w/ Axl Transducer Pickup(in Open D)
An Epiphone Classical w/ Axl Transducer Pickup
A Hamer Velocity 4 String Active Bass
A Fender 5 String passive Jazz Bass
A Kimberly Shortscale Hollowbody Bass
A Takamine Acoustic Bass
A Mahalo A/E Ukulele
My homemade diddly bow.
I have some parts scattered around, but those are the functional instruments.

I have too many, but it's too hard to part with any of them. Almost each one has a unique purpose, even if it rarely gets played.
I have:
- A dreadnought acoustic for playing bluegrass
- A smaller body acoustic for old-time or more comfortable playing at home
- A travel guitar
- A beater acoustic
- Another acoustic that works better for fingerstyle
- A nylon string guitar
- A 12-string guitar
- A heavy metal electric guitar
- A nice strat
- A cheap strat
- A bass guitar
And then there are the mandolins and banjos.

i just spent an hour or so playing my brother's Gibson ES-175 and now I want one!!
no not really. way out of my budget range, but i do want a bigger hollow-body electric for that soft, fat sound. probably will get a Douglas some time next year after I thin the herd.

tell me about it. he's a doctor though, with no wife or kids to support, so he has a lot of nice toys. 62" plasma tv, BMW, Gibson ES-175, about 5 thousand CD's and about a thousand DVD's, etc etc. I love visiting him.

I have 1 electric and 1 baby acoustic... The electric definitely gets most of my attention. I feel like I need to add any 50's reissue Strat (a CV or an RW) and another Schecter with EMGs and an FR and I'll be happy
After a while the GAS would kick in and I'll get a Gretsch or Ibanez semi-hollow

I have an Ibanez AM73 semi-hollow body. I can't imagine not having it! Great tone, I only have to tune it when I change strings, VERY versatile and just plain good looking. Best part is how cheap they are!
With that said, I would practically kill for a Gibson ES-175! I have been GAS'ing for one of those for the longest time. It's funny, when I was young, I used to look at hollows and say "who the heck would want to play that?" Now I know...ME! I can even play Metallica on it!

I think 6 or 7 guitars are about right, sometimes you just get your fill of the same guitar and don't want to pick it up (even a favorite), so something different laying round might inspire. I like such a large variety of music 1 just won't do. It's hard to go from bluegrass to uber death metal without a few stops in between. :D

I only have 4 electric guitars, but I'm closing in on 20 different amps.
I'm thinking of selling of the guitars, but I'm thinking of buying another amp. I don't know what this disease is called, but I bet it's hard to pronounce.

I have a few...
and the acoustics
Though in my defence I am a guitar teacher so I have to have most bases covered. I also play in a duo and though only the red and black Strats and Ayers acoustic go out live all the others I used on our albums and backing tracks. For my last instrumental project (just a private release given to friends and students) I used all the electrics except the White Strat + a homemade Lap Steel not in the picture.

My wife used to tell me that i play with my guitars more than i play with her..LOL.. On a serious side, I have a lot of vintage guitars that don't get played too much, and thats because that i have a lot of partscasters and the such that sound so great and if they get banged up no big deal.

Yeah i have few, every one has been played live.
I put together a strat the one in my sig and spanked its ass for 12months, its currently in its case waiting a complete setup when i get around to it.
I have my danelectro 56 U2 in the middle of an electronics and bridge upgrade so it in a case but has always been my go to slider. Currently have my 90's G&L ASAT special thats been my no1 for 15yrs back out of the case after a year and its still my fav after all that time, its a very special guitar to me.
I aslo have acoustics and resonators, cureently the reso is my fav player but i have a my bought new 70's Fender F65 acoustic and thats always been the no1 in or out of the case, lots of memories there.
Theres a few more kickin around here as well, all get played.

I play everything I've got that I like, which is most of it (as you'd hope). A Strat, a Tele and a biggish box. I have another spare Strat which I'm less keen on, and a Jet King for out-and-out rock, and they're largely unused. But it's nice to be able to pull stuff out from under the bed occasionally and reacquaint oneself with it from time to time.

graham232-That's quite the line-up, congrats. Do I see a 12 string with P90's on it? I don't think I've ever seen or heard one. How does it sound?

I had to have the pickguard custom made for the Pacifica. The pickups are from GFS.
I had wired the usual Strat style layout for 7 way switching an found I used the front and back combination more than anything else. I decided to go for the P90s since I still wanted a single coil sound, just a little fatter.

I've got 2 strats,2 teles,2 acoustics and 4 basses.Whichever two that has new strings gets to go to the gig with me.
I had 46 guitars at one time. All it took was a divorce to thin them out.

I've got two complete partscaster Strats, one sea-foam with Seymour Duncan pups, one screaming-ass red with SRV Texas Specials. The seafoam is a hardtail, the red is a trem.
I'm building a black Strat with Jeff Beck Noiseless pups in a tortoise pickguard and Sperzel locking tuners.
I also have an ESP body and another set of Seymour Duncans for it, along with a set of Gotoh tuners. I'm ALSO building a Tele with active EMG pups. The Tele will have a custom pickguard, of course, to accomodate the (older but unused) EMGs, one is a P-58, the other a P-60. It'll be a hardtail, natch. I have a really gorgeous piece of some exotic wood (I forget the actual name) that I'll use for that pickguard.
And I have a pretty decent old Washburn acoustic.
I have been a working musician, to the point that there were pretty respectable periods when I earned my living at it, but that was as a drummer. I've never earned a dime as a guitarist but hope springs eternal.
Know what's got 3 legs and a giant a**hole? A DRUM STOOL. Thanks, you're a good audience. You guys from out of town? Try the veal. I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitress, meth ain't getting any cheaper.

I'm 14 now, if I get married, my girl better like my axes, cuz I don't wanna get rid of any of 'em. I got so many memories. My G-400 was my first electric, my washburn taurus 16 is my first bass and it kicks any fenders off the block. My washburn acoustic is my one and only acoustic and it is great for everything. A WORD OF ADVICE, GET A GIRL THAT PLAYS GUITAR!!! That eliminates the need to get rid of a guitar. :-)
