Sophomorically speaking

Someone used the word Sophomoric in a thread recently.
Never heard of it before but I guess it is self defining.
It appears to be in some web dictionaries.
I think it is more likely to qualify as an American word than one to be commonly used in the English language.
My point? Not whether such new additions to the language are valid words but if they are useful.

What do you think? (Speaking purely epiphenomenonally of course).

Language (vocabulary) can be a great thing. In this age of the internet, unfortunately it is often shortened to the point where it is rendered a non-word. I studied Journalism in university so always appreciate people who have an extended vocabulary; but in the same breath find it hard to handle people who misuse vocabulary!

I would not go so far as using the word hate, more a case of being slightly pericombobulated in a phrasmotic way.

It's human nature that evolves language and pushes the boundaries of human thought.. if we didn't allow it, we would be sophomoric to think otherwise.

I took my public education for granted until I moved to a rural area where vocabulary, spelling, and grammar are all quite lacking. I've been here in western NH (VT line) for almost 5 years now and I sometimes catch myself falling into the ways of the aboriginals. It's scary. You should se what comes across company e-mail sometimes.

I conceive that we should use the word sophomorically most indubiously.

I concur that in order to placate the masses one must sometimes dumb down their manner of speaking in order to be understood and not come across as someone of stature, but instead to be perceived as a common man, one of the people. Intelligence or any kind of extended vocabulary appears to be severely looked down upon these days.

Someone had a go at me and you for being sophomoric in another thread, only they didn't spell it correctly, which was fantastic.

They then started hassling me via PMs, stalking me basically, quoting my real name at me and stuff like that as if they were hunting me down.
Hilarious, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Well, that was a fast moving, long winded thread for sure. I declined to read every word as I was really more concerned how this poor chap was going to get fair treatment with his "vintage" MIJ.

As to the word itself- "softmorphic" well, it's been around a long time and was very popular on college campuses in the 50s, and as to whether it was used properly, well, I'll just say it was indeed mispelled.

To be fair, softmorphic could have been a whole new word. Softly Morphic. Sounds like a new band name to me. Soft Morphic.

Indubitably my dear aficionados of electrical stringed contrivances or apparatus's for producing and moving musical vibrations of atmospheric air into timpanical aural orifices, thereby massaging aural ear nerves and producing pleasant sensations in the gelatinous mass of the brain. You are all correctamundo.

Vocabulary is one thing but have you seen the grammer used? I guess proper sentence structure, paragraphs and punctuation are no longer important to use.

Indubitable - in-doo-bi-tuh-buhl - adjective - cannot be doubted; patently evident or certain; unquestionable

One of my favorite words.

Why do people make up new words when there is an absolutely adequate existing one? This includes phrases of course. One that instantly annoyed me was "Power Outage"

I don't mind what words people use, but the thing that really puzzles me is why Americans have to pronounce and change the spelling of numerous English words

Too many to list here, however some examples, with the correct English spelling on the left are:

Analyse - Analyze
Catalogue - Catalog
Colour - Color
Criticise - Criticize
Defence - Defense
Favourite - Favorite
Honour - Honor
Memorise - Memorize
Pyjamas - Pajamas

I'm sure some American University has a whole department dedicated to changing the spelling and pronounciation of every English word that exists.

John the answer is simple and I am surprised it has not yet occurred.

Americans need to tell the world that the language they use is called American.

Then we English speakers can relax, safe in the knowledge that they are developing their own language, not mangling ours.

The British make things to complicated. Like saying ad-ver-tis-ment when they mean adver-tize-ment. And everyone knows you cant have a "torch" without an open flame, which is why we call it a flashlight.

we are ever so sorry.

The main reason the language is called English is because it came from England, which is part of Britain, via European invaders. The majority of words in English were created by the English. Us Brits can't understand why the Americans change the spelling and, sometimes, pronounciation of words that came from England.

Still if it keeps them happy
