What's The Story On Painted Headstocks ?

I just picked this up with a B-Bender already in it, and I'm just wondering about the matching headstock. Can someone inform me

I had one of those back in 03, it was probably an 01 or 02 model. Mine didn't have the B-bender though. It was just a standard model at the time as I recall.

Edited to add that mine was maple rather than rosewood though but the headstock is the same. And one last edit to mention mine had a humbucker in the neck as well.

My American Special Mahogany Strat has a black headstock as well. See my avatar to the left. I think this is what Fender does for "Special" runs as Sprocket mentioned.

Mine also has very nicely crafted logo in chrome lettering.

I love the black. It's something different in contrast with the 9,000,000,000 other strats out there.

They are not just special or limited editions. Fender has made various production guitars with painted headstocks in the past, and probably will in the future.

The 1983 model called 'The Strat' was one of the first to have a painted headstock as an option

the Fender Aerodyne Classic Stratocaster also has a painted headstock

Actually Fender was painting some of the headstocks on several models back in the mid 60's. Stratocasters, Electric XIIs, Jazz Basses, Jaguars, Coronados. Probably Jazzmasters and others too but these are the ones I have pictures of in a book in front of me. The book is quite old and trying to fall apart; otherwise I'd try to scan some of the pics in.

I thought I remembered seeing some in the old days. That's why I only said one of the first instead of the first.

The main point is that they are not just limited or special editions

B-Bender is a guitar accessory that enables a player to mechanically bend the B-string up a whole tone (two frets) to C-sharp.

It's a mechanism that bends the b string up. It's installed inside the body of the guitar, and is activated with the front strap button. Gives you a pedal steel sound
