What was Mark Knopfler playing?
I've seen him live a few times (last week, in fact) and on video (check out Live in London) and I still can't make out the Strat-style guitar he grabs for once in a while. Headstock looks kind of Tom Anderson-y, but don't think that's it. He's been playing it for about 10 years or so. I'm sure we've got some Knopfler fans out there, anyone know the guitar I'm referring to?

I thought he was a long time Pensa-Suhr endorser.

Suhr has one for under $4k and the build quality is second to none (so I hear on other forums anyway). His version is called the carved top. John Suhr is the luthier that built THE Pensa-Suhr guitar Mr. Knopfler used in the 80s-90s. I personally would go with the guy who built it, not the guy who owned the shop.

Yes. He has his own compan/shop now. Top notch guitars and amplifiers. John Suhr is also the brains behind Custom Audio Amplifiers which he used to build when he worked with Bob Bradshaw but I believe Mr. Suhr now sells them from Suhr guitars. People on HugeRacksInc.com just rave over the guitars and amps.

Thanks for the great info. The sound of that guitar was like nothing I've ever heard. Now, of course, it's really about Mr. Knopfler's talent and technique here, but it was awesome just the same. Think I'm going to look into the Pensa Suhr as my ultimate once-in-a-lifetime purchase. I can think of a few Strats in my closet I'd throw up on eBay to get one of them. Can't see how a vintage Start purchase could match the fun of playing a guitar like that. So, from what you know, is Rudy's in NYC the only place to go to see one?
