Fender factory seconds?

Greetings!

My first post here, so please bear with me as I learn the ropes of the forum.

I recently purchased a 1996 Japanese 62 re-issue. Stunning! All original with inspection and import tags. The guitar has a number 2 stamped in the lacquer on the back of the headstock right above the anniversary sticker. I've read on an older post here that this could be a factory second. I've taken the sticker and covered it up as it was annoying me (you can still see where the sticker was though :(

Is this really a "second"? Do they sell these? I can't find a flaw.

Does it significantly de-value the guitar if it is?

Thanks for your help!

I have never seen a Fender with a stamped "2". Maybe that should make it worth more! Have seen it on a few Ibanez's and a pile of Epiphones though.

The sticker is just the garden variety 50th anniversary sticker. The small gold oval. The "2" is hit in just above that. Hoping that the value stays in tact. I've been collecting and playing starts for a long time and have never seen anything like it. I really didn't think much of it because the guitar was so nice. Sweet player and sounds as good as my US stuff for sure.

I just asked my friend that works at Fender Corona. She said that they never do that and that Fender absolutely DOES NOT sell "seconds." It would not have the fender name on it. She said everything they sell is considered legit and never a second. They do sell stuff to others, but NEVER with Fender logos or serial numbers.

Fender Japan is not owned by Fender. They are a contract company, so the Corona report doesn't work there. This may be a factory second from Fender Japan, possibly Japanese market only. It is not made in a Fender factory though.

Hey thanks for all the help!

Yes, this was definitely put on by the factory. Looks too good not to be.

Now here is the confusing part. The guitar came with the import tag and inspection card. If it was from Japan (which it is) and a second (which it could be I guess) why would it get imported and pass inspection? Again, it looks and sounds great, but a mystery to be sure.

That's weird. I would send an Email to Fender with the guitars serial # and query. It may take a few days. I did that with Gibson and they answered all of my questions completely within 3 days. I too, like knowing ALL the details of my guitar even if it's a cheapie, which usually makes it very difficult or impossible.

Import order, someone liked it and bought it used or new from Japan.

Sure they sell seconds - they knock them off the table and kick them around the room a bit, run over them with the fork lift a few times, call them "Road Worn" and raise the price by a few hundred bux.

I have seen this on a few new Fenders in Japan. What does it mean, i dont know. I always thought Epi and Gibson were in to selling seconds. 90% of what they make.

I have read, several people have had that 2 stamped on Fenders. Almost all say its a second, and that all it means is the paint had a blem in it.

Yes, I've read the same. Does it de-value the guitar?

Also, how does it pass inspection?

A blem in the finish is no biggie, if it was you would have already noticed it.. Just enjoy the guitar and if anyone ask, say it came in 2nd place in a beauty contest.

YES! Fender DID sell factory seconds. Got through to Fender, and they denied ever doing such a practice. Fender did give me the serial # data and I called the music store it was sold to originally. They immediately said it was was a second, and it only hurts the the price marginally. They sold them for $50-75 dollars cheaper.

Would the "2" stop you from buying it?

Thanks for all of your help!

I have a unfinished Fender American Standard Tele body complete with all Fendr stamps. That Fender will deny ever selling.

They are rare but I have had 2 of them.

Its for sale in the classifieds, check it out.
