70's Strat

Hi,

I'm trying to help out a good friend of mine. He wants me to put his early 70's strat on ebay. He has no computer skills. I was wondering if someone could help me determine a fair price. The guitar is blond ash with a maple neck that's straight. The neck has some wear as the guitar has been used quite a bit. Everything is original and everything works as should. Comes with a hardshell case (new, not original). Great action. One owner.

I know that this is a tough call to make without seeing the guitar, but maybe give me a low and high price range. It would be much appreciated as he needs to sell it to pay off some bills.

001-3500 too many variables you are leaving out. what "some wear" means to you could mean refret to someone else...you will need to take apart the guitar for photos on ebay....most people won't take your word that it's all orig. If you think about it, you probably wouldnt take someone else's word would you? Snap some photos, we love pics here on Strat Talk...it gives us something to talk about!

You may want to look at completed auctions on Ebay of similar early 70s Strats.

That's a good place to start. I did a quick check. I'd say $1K - $3K is the range. One sold near $3K, but that was only one, and it had the original case, vg condition. Saw a couple that did not sell at buy-it-now prices above $2K, so my hunch is you'd be lucky to get near $3K. My uneducated guess is the closer you can place it to 1970, the more appealing it will be, so an exact year would be good. If it's 1-owner, you should have a pretty good idea. Of course, if you've got other stuff, like original paperwork or anything else that appeals to collectors, you could change the interest level a lot.

If you're an eBay novice, read a lot about how to maximize auction success. And, like everyone says, have some really good pictures. You should have a pretty good seller rating, too, if you expect someone to send you over $1K cash.

Well, thanks folks for the info, it has helped a lot. I used to repair these things, but have been away from it for too long and really had no idea what the market is like in 2008 (almost 2009). So many thanks to you guys for your input.
