Same old problems with MIM pickups

Ok,

So I am finally over my fix about sticking with the stock MIM pickups. They are very clear sounding, but simply don't have the bright and glassy sound of a classic strat. I stand convinced that it is the difference between the ceramic and alnico magnets.

Here is my dilemma: I am going to change the pups in my MIM strat soon and don't really know what to get. I like the sound of the Custom Shop 69s I hear on youtube, but really don't care what they are as long as I can get that classic strat sound with a little bite.

Any suggestions?

I just installed a set of the Fat 50's in my Warmoth Partscaster and LOVE them. Depending on position and/or tone knob you can get a nice warm sound, a plucky sound, classic sound...

I've been trying to get a sound clip (all I have is a camcorder), I'll try to get one posted in the next day or so.

All that said, pickups are so personal it's hard to get much from someone's comments on the net...

Cheers.

As I mentioned recently, I had changed my stance on the '69s after playing a CS 69 strat at my local dealer, as well as the short time I spent the the classic Player 60's strat. I really like them.

I liked the so much I grabbed a boxed set at my local dealer on sale (or lower than what MF sells them for).

If I end up ordering a Vintage Vibe 60's as I think I am going to do, I'll likely put these in that model, unless of course I like what comes stock. Then I would consider possibly moving them to my black bullet

I just took two pics for you to see the packaging they come in:

I still swear by the antiquity's...for a couple bucks more than the fender texas specials and a few less than the 69's, they are smokin classic strat..I will see if I can find a soundfile somewhere for ya

Isn't it great that there are so many good choices? Here's my humble take on a few:
CS69's: Bright and snappy, clear and transparent with a big treble bite. Can get a little harsh on the top end with the wrong amp, GREAT neck pickup. A real winner, tell Abbie we said hi.
FRALIN: Glass, shimmer, harmonic sparkle, what's not to like? Vintage Hot's are exactly what they say they are, Blues Specials can do all the things Texas Specials are supposed to do, without that overly middy (to me) tone.
LOLLAR: My favorites. Somehow Jason has figured out how to keep that wonderful air that everyone wants in a vintage voiced strat without ANY harsh treble overtones. It's almost like my guitar is breathing. Even his SPECIALS, which are higher powered(comparatively) keep that signature strat sparkle.
AV57/62: Considerably less costly than boutiques, and everything I could ever want in a strat. Just plain PRETTY sounding. I have a 62RI and a 62HR loaded with them, and I can't find any reason to replace them. Seem to be very sensitive to height adjustment. I keep the bass side way down.
TEXAS SPECIALS: I don't like them, though many think they're the cat's pajamas. To my ears they seem stuck in the midrange, and sacrifice transparency. They do have balls though, just not what I look for in a strat. To each his own.
Everybody has their favorites, and these are a few of mine that I think you might be happy with from the sound of your post. I'm pretty sure that for every one I've mentioned there are about 50 others that will do the trick as well, and with the wealth of knowledge and experience in this forum I'll bet you'll be happy no matter who's advice you choose to heed in making your decision. Good Hunting!

Love my 57/62's a lot. Very chimey and clear sounding. They are a lower output pickup so you get a very vintage sound from them.

A bud has a CP60's strat with the CS69's. They are very nice sounding too. A little creamier and less bright. Although the bridge pickup is a little more bright sounding.

I find my 57/62's get a better Buddy Holly sound, where my bud's CS69's get a better Hendrix like tone. I like them both for what they do.

I agree with you on that assessment.

Try some '54s too and I think you can grab alot of Holly sound without much else involved too.

I think switching pups and changing wiring schemes are two of the easiest and most dramatic changes you can do to change the tone. I have nine strats, each with different pups.....

1)57/62s - I really like these a lot. They retain a lot of the sparkle and chime but the neck has a nice bluesy tone.

2)Fralin SP43's - probably my favourites since I play louder stuff and these guys have that in spades. The bridge is in P-90 territory and gives you some real crunch when using a good tube amp. I think these are the best sounding strat pups I have. (currently)

3)Fralin Vintage Hots - another great sounding set of pups from Lindy. These have all the airyness (is that a word!??) and chime of the late 50's but also can overdrive a tube amp quite well. I love the tone from these guys when paired with a blender-type wiring scheme......very versatile.

4)Copperhead 1959 set - relatively unknown Canadian hand-wound pups which are very affordable and sound great. A little noisy since they are not RW but they retain a lot of the classic strat tones with some really nice dynamics. They really respond well to picking technique and are very height sensitive. I'm still tweaking mine everytime I play the strat that I have them in.........cool and well priced!

5)American Alnico II's = pretty good sounding pups in my VG strat. A little flatter and lower output than what I normally like but they sound good enough that I won't ever change them from this guitar.

6)Keystones - great sounding pups from the legends Bill and Becky. They sound really good and are again, very height sensitive. They only complaint I have is the neck tone; don't know if it's the output but it doesn't come across as meaty as others. The neck and middle are great though and I think the middle position is the best!

7)Fender CS Fat 50's - bought these because I had heard good things about them and they are very good. They have a really nice top end that shimmers. Think Eric Johnson clean; what they don't do so well is drive the tubes in my amp.

Seymour Duncan duckbuckers and Lil'59 - I really like SD pups and these things are very good sounding. For recording, I will often grab this strat because it is so silent. Also, the high output from the bridge really does give a great humbucker tone. I am always surprised and happy to hear how quiet and transparent these pups are.........they sound great with a tube amp but maybe even better in the digital realm with lots of effects.

9)Seymour Duncan JBjr and Texas Specials - I have one mongrel strat with a combo of these pups and they sound pretty good together. They bridge is very loud compared to the TS and even rolling off the volume doesn't really let you equalize the tone from all three. I am a fan of Texas Specials (even though they often get a bad rap) but the neck tone is very SRV and thick. Like them a lot.

So, there is my assessment from what I know. For me, the Fralin SP43's are the best sounding all-around pups for a strat but they are not cheap. Combined with blender wiring, they are amazing sounds pups!
