HELP! - Callaham Bridge Block Problems...

Hello!

I changed my stock American Standard block for a Callaham yesterday. For some reason, the tension has changed - the strings are pulling the bridge right up. Why is this?

I looked on the Callaham site and he says to use 4 springs, so I put another one in and the tension is almost back to normal (ie bridge nearly touching body) but not quite, also the tremelo arm is now really stiff, which I dont like.

Shall I adjust the screws in the back of the trem cavity? I'm reluctant to do this because I recently had a professional setup. Have I done something wrong on installation?

As for the block - yes it does provide a hair more sustain, but to be honest I don't think it's worth the £50 ($100) I had to pay for it!

Many thanks,

J

That's a difficult question. Whether I'm qualified or not, I took it upon myself some time ago to do all my own set ups, in part because of this very sort of issue.
If you can look after your own guitar, you can get in on a cost effective basis on any new product or modification that sounds appealing to you.
I will tell you that when a Callaham kit goes on, I start from scratch in terms of the number of springs, the position of the trem claw, the string guage, saddle positions; the whole thing is up for grabs.
I am exceedingly pleased with all of my Callaham purchases. I will grant you this - my MIM FSR Standard Strat was utterly transformed (so much better); whereas the steel block replacing the zinc block on my US G + L Comanche was as much different as it was better.

Not sure if the spring placement is different on a Callaham, but every post I've seen regarding the product is positive. I know the trem bar insert is different on them.

I'll probably wind up with one in the near future....

Yup, common and easy to fix, I think. Let the screws in the spring claw out a couple of turns and see how you like it.
