Late 60's early 70's Big Headstocks all of the rage...
Everywhere I look it seems more people are looking for these or just bought one. My guess is they're relatively affordable compared to their more vintage counterparts is alot of the reason (still more than I am willing to spend though), as is their desire to be played. A friend of mine still owns his '69 which he bought new. After spending some time with it (again), I am more than ever interested in these. I played a few Custom shop closet classics that really did a great job of replicating the feel and sound of his.
So my query is this. Those of you who own originals, how do you find the Fender Custom Shop's efforts in replicating the sound and feel of your's if you had the chance to compare?

They are close in feel for the most part. Tonally, eh, well, let's just say you gotta play a few of them to find one that kicks. Then again, you gotta do that with the originals too LOL!

That's how I feel too, WOT. I am heading out in a few minutes to go back to the shop that has the 2 69's and 1 '68 CS. I may take the plunge on one of those if I get caught up in the moment after plugging them in.

I played a black CS '69 that was nails. It was a local guy's main warhorse for a couple of years, he "reliced" it by playing the hell out of it. Being a bit "played in" naturally really gave it a really good feel.

One of the two Closet Classic 69's I looked was a black with a really pale (in a nice way) Maple neck. The other was a special order White w/ matching White headstock a real looker. Of course I ended up with the EJ Sig Strat, but I am making room for another and I would love to have either of those in my collection...

Yep, just in the matter of a few days I've been looking at a range from $99 to 2999.00. Even picked up one I wasn't even looking for at first along the way.
Amazing just how many options there are for us. It's a great feeling though finding something that just makes you say "That's the one"! Even if it is a $99 Squier you want to upgrade.

Well since I last posted in this thread the GAS temptress reared her head again, this time a non-standard run Dakota Red CS '69 Relic w/ Rwd FB. The only thing this one buzzes. Need to be set-up. Maybe it went through a temp/humidity change since it's now hanging on the shop's wall after being shipped 3k miles...

Wow, Dennis we want to see we want to see.
Dakota Red Relic that should really be something grand. Is it a heavy relic?
Where did you buy it?

Well, I didn't actually buy it, but I am GASSED up over it. It probably wont last long. I've gotten excited over a few guitars in the last few months that I paused on and watched them disappear into the hands of another. This one is s a Relic, not a Heavy Relic. Just enough it seems. Since it's a non-standard color for the '69 CS, it is a special one. The Dakota Red with the Rosewood and large headstock is nice. The aged parts were done well too.
That last guitar I had a big case of GAS over was another non-standard color Fender. That one was a '51 Nocaster in Pink. That was something. Lasted just a few days before it was gone.

Sounds like you're moniker fits your collection count. I had a '79 Anniversary that I sold a while back. Yes, I too tend to like the varying design differences as well...
