Got a spare $110k lying around & like Blondies?
From time to time and out of pure curiosity, I search eBay and reset the search criteria by highest price first to see what's on " The show". I call it The Show because it seems mostly to be a showcase of the guitar itself as I've very rarely seen such figures actually get bids. But I suppose it gets people to look at their other listings which is probably part of the intent. Especially since it's about $25k over book as well. Still, great eye candy for those of us who drool over such items.
So here's one that seems really cool Strat, despite the price...
Vintage '57 Mary Kaye style....

I never noticed that the Mary Kaye Strats had gold hardware. Huh, who knew. I just checked my Strat Bible and sure enough gold hardware. It's probably common knowledge, but it slipped past me before.

Nice guitar but.... you'd need armed body guards to play at the local pub.
A co-worker of mine has a uncle who just sold an old Strat to someone down in the States. He sold it for $25,000. Not sure the year, but it was in decent shape. Late 50's, maybe. My buddy didn't know all the details. Except that it was some business man that bought it.

I could fill my home with strats and partscasters for that kind of $$. Too rich for my blood; I would be afraid to play it lest the value goes down. Vintage prices are just too crazy anymore to consider most of them..........

A lot of these guys are fishing for a silly buyer. They also want to "show off" what they have without really wanting to sell it. He also might get some crazy trades on it too.

Yes, that was about the year ('57) that one or two Gold hardware Strats came about, made for (or at least famous by) Mary Kaye (Trio)... It was cool she lived longe enough to see and pose for/with the Reissue Mary Kaye Strat (White with Gold hardware of course). And much cheaper than the above example...
I'm sure it's well documented somewhere but I understand there was a '58 Jazzmaster that had the gold hardware treatment as well, but not as a full production offering. But you're right, you really don't think of Gold hardware strats in that period or soon thereafter

Yes, I agree. But at the same time I do understand the prices. It's a special ERA in time and one that won't be repeated in our time here. That said, like many others, I'll settle for what Fender is turning out today. But I'll always appreciate the true vintage models.
