    Hi All,
I just wondered if there were any famous guitars that played mid to late 70s CBS Strats. Other than Blackmore and Malmsteen, I haven't heard of any, I understand most players in the 70s and 80s (like Knopfler), were using pre-CBS Strats.

    Anyone know of any?

Knopfler had Schecter too (I had a couple of Schecter myself - beautiful guitars).

Can't think of any to answer your question though. The Edge maybe.

Yes, the Edge's '73 springs to mind. I've recently built a very similar guitar which has a 70's Pawn Shop neck. It's the only way to get the full bullet headstock look on a Strat (which I love) with a modern 9.5" radius and 4 bolt heel.

I also noticed Squeeze using very similar guitars in one of their videos on a documentary at the weekend. 70's Strats seemed to be everywhere on telly in the late 70's and 80's, but not so much being used exclusively by big artists.

Personally I love the 70's Strat look, but I appreciate that the quality is variable to poor, and I've never actually played a vintage example. I was born in '74 though, so I do harbour notions that I might get one from that year for my birthday.

Ritchie Blackmore! sorry for repeat, I cannot skip him

    Bonnie Raitt

David Gilmour also played CBS Strats with large headstocks, even his actual Black Strat body is from CBS Strat

Lowell George & Paul Barrere of Little Feat. Paul still uses a 70's Stratocaster in Shoreline Gold to this day !

I do recall Gerry Garcia playing a Stratocaster also, but I'm not sure if it was a 70's CBS model though, but it was certainly an all-natural finish ! He also played some with "flower-power" designs...

Frank Zappa used one for a time also...

    Cheers,

    Rastus

Bonnies guitar is a mid-late 60s example, not from the 70s

Glenn Tipton played a modded '78 w/humbuckers and mirror pickguard quite a bit, and Wolf Hoffman played his old 70's strat in the studio on every Accept album.

In this vid, you can see both Glenn and KK playing big-headstock CBS strats.

Well Beck & Marvin only used 1970s Strats until Fender started making better Strats a few years later. Then they stopped.

But if that's the case couldn't you also argue Marvin used pre cbs strats until they started making better strats in the 70s ? :)
