I dug out my old peavey classic 30 head today and was messing around with some pedals and I dug out my DS1 and set it with the gain pretty much on zero and I was really liking the sounds I was getting.
    Clean channel of course...

I believe Chris Duarte did this back in the day. Anyone else doing that?

Always made a decent boost pedal. I had a friend who used one as his lead boost for many years, into Marshall JMP50s.

[EDIT- I have a friend who used one...]

Yeah I like the DS1 better as a boost than most ODs.

It can also get a pretty nice OD tone aside from boost and DS.

Yep, I concur. Classic for good reason.

I also liked a strat through a DS clone with gain ≈ 0 quite a lot.

I agree, the DS1 sounds really good as a boost, especially into a Marshall.

    .

I stack a pair of DS1s, first like you have near zero gain and the second not more than 4-5 out of 10 on gain. I originally got the second one to mod while keeping a baseline but the combo makes for such a nice six-knob boutique pedal that I've left them alone. $40 total into both of mine.

I've done the lower gain thing with a DS1 as well... works decent... I never liked it full blown gain set high... sounds too compressed but, it opens in the lower gain area set around 9-10 O'Clock-ish...

I removed both diodes from mine and I use it to push my Mad Professor "One" pedal. Sounds pretty good on it's own, too.

    i used one for years,
to drive an already slightly crunchy mesa boogie into lead tone.

i paid $30 for it in a pawn shop,
and used it to gig and record with for about 15 years!!

    Yes.
I play with the volume knob on 5. Almost nothing rsounds high gain this way - so my DS-2 (on the 1 mod) gets me great classic rock tones... even with the gain all the way up.
