I know, this may be a very dumb question but forgive me because I am relatively new the world of strats.

My question is this: I had a wammy bar from my MIM strat that I sold years ago, and I was going to put it on my new American Standard Strat. No luck, it doesn't fit. When I do get it to bite, it appears to be going on cross-threaded and I don't want to ruin the tremolo bridge.

    Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Carl

I believe you answered your own question- yes, they are different and yes, you are cross-threading if you force it.

The MIM is, to the best of my knowledge, a metric instrument, while the American is imperial.

Thanks dueducs, it is what I thought, but I appreciate the confirmation. Time to shop for trem arm --- I should be able to pick one up online somewhere cheap. Thanks again,

They come in many shapes and forms, both with and without thread.

MIM's and many imports are typically 5 mm metric thread.
US vintage types are typically 10/32" imperial thread.
Some imports even use 5.5 or 6 mm metric thread.
Then you have all the push/pop-in types, some with set screws and others with retainer clips.
