Take off that back cover and play naked. You'll have it back on as soon as you pick the hairs from the springs.

Dudes! Sometimes the tone of the backplate is so great that you don't even need the rest of the guitar!

....why would you play naked? If your name isn't Flea.

It makes an enormous difference, but it requires a few more steps:

    1) Remove the cover and the tremolo/bridge.
    2) Drop a stick-on transducer through the hole.
    3) Reattach the tremolo/bridge.
    4) Attach the transducer to the tremolo block.
    5) Reattach the cover.
    6) Plug in the transducer.

I like them off. I think it looks better that way and they look odd with them on, just like LPs and the tiny scratch plate....they come off too.....

Does it affect tone, each can decide on their own. It’s a nebulous as how short do I cut the strings after the posts.

Mine are off, but of course neither of my Strats are even drilled for a back cover to be attached

    Hub caps???? LOL!!!!!
Gotta either rock alloys or plain steelies, hub caps are a joke!!!!
And i don't leave back plates on... once they come off, they stay off.
They aren't 'missing', they have been 'deliberately removed', although i will
put them and the screws in a bag and throw them in the case or gig bag, in case
the instrument gets sold on in future to someone who cares about such things.
But you are entitled to your (wrong) opinion, and to do whatever you like on your guitars.
    :p

They key to getting great tone is to take out just one of the screws, the one furthest away from where the ground wire is soldered to the claw. That's the screw that interferes with the resonant magnetic field. If your guitar is black or has a rosewood board or is made of northern ash this is not necessary.

I don't know how the removal of some plastic on the back of the pup would somehow effect the tone.

Maybe if it was metal it would effect the magnetic field of the pup (ie. Tele bridge pup).

I've heard people who think leaving the cover off lets the springs vibrate more freely giving a touch of reverb.

I leave mind off so string changes are faster and easier.

I leave mine off so I don’t get buckle rash on them.

I have a ziplock baggie full of pristine back covers.

Why have you dug up a troll thread from 2011? This pointless thread has been resting in peace for 8 years until, at random, you decided to revive it. Please tell me as I'd love to know - what made you decide to look for something so pointless in ST's history to use as the basis for your third post?

I doubt if the person to whom you are replying will read your comments as they last posted on here in 2013.

Yep, that is how pointless this discussion is......

Ah, but what do you clean it with? I’ve found that if you polish the inside with automotive silicon base polish it really helps reflect the natural reverb effect of tge trem springs back into the guitar body which increases sustain. Yeah, right! This is constantly ‘the Kings new clothes’. If you want to hear a change in tonecI’m sure you will. No, you really will hear a change. Hearing is your brain’s interpretation of a physical force. If a reckons his Stratvsojnds better with a piece of plastic removed or in place, absolutely fine, his / her opinion. Personally, I can’t be bothered to think about it.

Clearly you can as you have just posted in a thread that has been dead & buried for 8 years.

You even went back to find a post from 2011 to reply to..... o_O

I like to leave them off. When my tummy fat starts to get squashed by the trem block I know it's time to stop eating.
