I take mine off. Without the back cover you get more reverb sound from the trem springs which I like a lot. Maybe this is why Eric Johnson likes it also, it sounds more resonant.
    Not even joking.

With respect, Fairweather did that and the thread was near the top of the list when I answered. OK, I could be bothered, but only to express my disbelief that it was still being discussed.

With limited parts in a guitar and never ending discussions the same items will be discussed over and over....

Realistically most posts would be revived Zombies.....

Imagine what it will sound like if you wire the springs in series with the pickups.

Well I like to fill my springs with foam rubber then put the cover back on then fill the cavity with great stuff expanding foam until it starts to squirt ot the rest of the string holes. At which point I drill the holes out so I can change the strings every couple years. There's no room for resonant springs in my guitars...nope, none what so ever. That's even worse than microphonic p'ups.

So you basically pot your springs just like pickups....brilliant!

Exactly, who has time for microphonic springs. They just sound cheap.

I took one of mine off for a little while and found out that all the music was leaking out the back.

I've also heard that the mojo spillls out of the back when the cover is off so you should only keep it off when you are playing it so it spills onto you. Then put it back on when storing it so the mojo isn't wasted.
But that's just an internet thing, I imagine.

I took the cover off on my 1970 Stratocaster, without any tone change. I left it in my case because the cover was cracked.

I have a 1990 Strat Ultra, and never took the cover off. It still sounds better than the 1970, but the Laces on the 1990 are just better than the Alnico5 pickups.
