this isnt for me, but for my ex wife.
i just talked to her and she said her headlights are draining her battery.
i think she has a little two door sports car, like an old miata or something.
what would cause this? bad alternator?

The first thing I check is the free stuff.

Are her battery cable ends corroded?

Take the car to have the battery and alternator checked.

    Odds are, this'll cover it.

Check the voltage at the battery with everything hooked up. Turn the lights on and check again and see if the voltage stays the same or starts to drop off. Verify if it’s the lights or not.

Sounds like a alternator like mentioned above. She can get somebody to take it off and take it to parts store and they can test it.

The alternator is the most obvious and possibly most likely culprit. But don’t rule out a short in the electrical system/wiring either. Had a friend replace an alternator not too long ago. They told him the existing one couldn’t keep up with the load. (Lights, effects, amps, etc...). Swapped it out with a stronger model and still had the same problem.

Tell her to turn the headlights off when she's not using them, especially when she shuts the car off.

Alternator and battery seem to go in unison for me. And the starter is usually in there someplace, too!

Out here batteries are in a living hell, along with anything rubber.

Tell her, if it is the alternator...ok...suggest that she might want to replace the serpentine belt at the same time...

    Isn't WASP the best?
They're one of the only 80s bands that don't sound cheesy.
Just the other day in traffic I heard someone blasting WASP.It was some super hot looking executive chick in a BMW!

Check the electrolyte level in the battery while your at it. Top up with distilled water if low.
