Not sure if this is the right section...

Guitar: Squier Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster Butterscotch Blonde

I had to do some mods. The original pickups were fine but I was not convinced with how they drive as they were not meant to play the metal I wanted.
    Modifications:
    • Artec Giovanni custom single coil sized rail humbuckers with full 64mm rails, Alnico 5
    • GFS Overwound Repro Vintage Alnico Tele Neck Pickup
    • Fender 500k vol pot,
    • Fender 250k tone pot but has no-load option - goes straight to output
    • OG 4-way for:
      • 1st - neck
      • 2nd - neck+bridge south
      • 3rd - bridge south
      • 4th - full bridge humbucker

    Effects and Interface: Boss GT-100

Absolutely yes and there is no mod strictly needed.

My Squier Affinity could definitely do 80s-90s thrash with the stock ceramic bridge pickup, which isn't a bad little pickup imo. I replaced it with an original vintage, which can still do metal, but not as convincingly.

Sure sounds like it to me. I think a tele can do just about any kind of music convincingly, which has always struck me as probably the best thing about it. Probably the best all around guitar out there, IMO.

Nice job! Actually I believe any guitar can do metal well. With enough distortion they all tend to have a similar sound.

Zakk can get some interesting sounds out of an acoustic.

    .

Still have your wiring diagram for that switching and pickup layout? Would be great to see.

I run an H-Esquire-Tele with a 4-way OG ('neck'/parallel/'bridge'/series) and use the screw pole heights to separate the bobbin tones. I also rotated the control plate to get the switch away from the volume knob (Kirchen mod).

Check out Rebea's double take after Dan says 'let me have a try' with his stock Tele, it's around 5-10 and 20-25 minutes in this video

This is always a fun juxtaposition

I play metal on my 73 tele all the time. 100% stock.

    Yes, I'm a fan of John 5.

But, my goal was to have a sleeper Tele that looks like an innocent Classic Vibe. John 5's has full sized humbuckers.

Jim Root will give you a good answer on that.

If the player can play in the style of metal...and has the right stuff at the other end of the guitar cable....the guitar is the least important part of the chain. :)

Indeed, but his Teles were specifically built for metal with full size humbuckers and all.

The stock pups didn't work well for me although they were great for what they were for.

I don’t think J5 does metal with a single coil.

Once and for all, anything can be played on any guitar.

Of course you can play metal on a tele!! You can play country on a Jackson or Hammer or you can play bluegrass on a flying V. Its a guitar. You can tune a guitar, but can you tuna fish?

Biggest problem with metal on single coils is the noise. It trains you to have fast reflexes on the volume knob.
