Hi and welcome to ST. If you look at the guitardater site and put in the serial
number it will give you some information.

Hello, your guitar was made by the Saehan(Sunghan) plant in Korea in 1998. Several folks have done really good research and posted results. I just google KV Squire Serial Numbers and it comes right up. Hope this helps.

I just picked up a KV last night in Midnight Blue. Solid, plays nice (I'm no expert - sounds great to me and it tuned up nice and quick and has stayed there so far). The Standards are alder alder (the Pro Tones are ash) with one piece maple necks, which is why I picked up that one I found yesterday for about 85 bucks US. So far so good.

Are these heavy because they are plywood? Or did Squier stop the plywood bodies when they moved production from Japan to Korea?

Plywood bodies existed in Korea for Squier as early as 1988-89.....until about 1995/96.....

Fender Japan never had plywood bodies AFAIK, just that MDF wood fiber, and only from 1994/96 on the lowest end models

a KV97 or KV98 was around the time of Squier Pro Tone production, when things were brought Korean quality back to the level they should have been at in the early to mid 90s....or to the level they were at when they got the Squier/Fender 1987 contract...

There was a Yamaha ad that put a total end to non solid wood Squier production....by embarrassing them...

Your guitar is not an Affinity...it's just a Squier Standard......Affinity were made in china in 1998....

yours is better than an Affinity...

I had a 1994 Japanese Squire Strat that had everything about it that you don't want in a Strat. It had a (heavy) plywood body, ceramic pickups, cheap plastic switch & those nasty trap tuners.

I didn't keep it long & I don't miss it one little bit!

That's a very good advert from Yamaha.

Not seen that Yamaha advertisement before I imagine it did embarrass Squier/Fender

I've seen Japanese Squiers with plywood bodies too, they certainly existed. And I remember the Pacifica advert well.

I was shocked when I saw that it was plywood - I didn't expect that from Japan. But it wasn't the Japanese who made that decision, it was the parent company. I'm glad I bought it though so that I know for myself what happened.

You've never heard of the different level/models of Squier Strats?

Bullet is the lowest end model, then the Affinity, then Standard, then Vintage Modified/Deluxe, then Classic Vibe....
