I had to wait over 2 weeks my D`Angelico EXL-1 archtop guitar until
Thomann in Germany got those themselves to be able to send my order.
Then it was fast: They got guitars in 17th, did send my ordered guitar
in 18th and i got it yesterday 6PM! It was quick!

EXL-1 is a beauty. Finish is among the best i have seen, it`s very
easy to play and tone is very clear and punchy. Frets are perfect,
smooth ends and height is right. Something like medium or medium jumbo
i guess. Neck is not as thin as i have read in some places, something
like C with a tad from U shape.

Both acoustic and electric tone is brighter than i expexted, but not
aggressive at all. Can be the factory installed D`Addario strings is
the cause. I won`t change to flatwounds as i has planned, but to some
smoother sounding roundwounds, because this guitar has so good acoustic
tone, electric tone can be good with right roundwounds too.

After all, very good value for 700 Euros!

I don’t even care what that guitar plays or sounds like, it is just F’n gorgeous

It needs to been on display in some main room in the house, preferably my house.

Don`t worry, it sounds very good now when i have set amp volume to about half, tone to 50% and guitar volume to half and tone between 30-40%. Now my Excel has smooth and jazzy tone even with factory strings, as it should!

I have had mine like 18 months or so. You are dead on, the sounds and tone out of these are amazing.

Just like a month ago, had a setup done, same strings as factory and the guitar is even better. How I don't know, but yeah....

Sorry i am late, but i like it more and more as time goes! I play it mostly as acoustic, despite i have 6 amps. If i was playing Excel as electric, i should change strings to flatwounds, to get right tone with amp. I have nice rounds in it now, when it is the time to change them, i will put flats in it.

It got a new friend week ago, should i write a NGD post for it too? It`s to left in my photo, Höfner Superluxe E2-SB-0.

Thank you. I’m glad :) the one I’ve found that have an offer is Premier EXL-1 not Excel. I’ve read somewhere about flatround strings, which brand do you use?

I have Thomastik 0.12 - 0.50s flatwounds in my Loar LH-309, D`Addario 0.11 - 0,49 gauge roundwounds in my Excel, Elixir 0.11 - 49s in Ibanez AKJ-95, and Thomastik 0.12 - 0.52 flats on Ibanez AF-75. Epiphone DeLuxe Masterbilt has factory medium roundwounds in it.

I have 52 guitars and 13 basses, i have flats in some solidbodies too, but it is too much to list all of them here. Phew!

If your Premier is full body 17" guitar, put flatwounds in it, if you have half acoustic version, it`s best to be played with rounds.

Thank you so much! 52 guitars! Do you have time to re-string them? :D

I checked Thomann.de, Excel sells for 1,500€ way beyond my budget. I don’t want to spend much on a guitar that I wouldn’t like to play much.

Premier EXL-1 comes with 12-52 roundwound strings, going down to 11 or 10 would be fine? Would it have any negative effect on the guitar?

Well, little less volume as acoustic, lighter to play, no big difference with amp!

Switch to flatwounds, keep the same string gauge. :)

What a classy, snazzy jazz box! I just love the sort of "art deco" thing they have going on! Whenever I see one I think of a jazz club in NYC, that whole guitar just exudes mojo!

Gonna have to visit YouTube land to hear one of these. Prices seem ore than reasonable too!

    BIG congratulations!
