I'm the designated competent person for our jobsite, most of our work is gov't so there has to be a scapegoat. That's where I come in.

As we all know the gov't floats on an ocean of paper. One of pieces of paper requires documentation that states that not only am i not an idiot when it comes to safety and machinery but I now have a card to prove it.

Most gov't contractors are now requiring at least one person on site at all times with an OSHA ten hour card which is what I'm doing today and tomorrow. So far I haven't seen anything in course I haven't run into in all my years in commercial construction. But now it'll be official. I'm going to hate when they mandate the 30 hour course

Yup. You have those few that are stupid enough they need to be protected from themselves, and ruin for everyone. Now, we need to keep our safety training to the lowest common denominator.

30 hour cards are the norm in the line of construction we are in. At least one person on the crew. 10 hour cards for everyone though.

I got my 10 hour card 20 years ago. Never upgraded since I got into management shortly thereafter. I'm glad I'm out of the field. The safety rules these days are ridiculous.

    Kinda reminds me...
Had a contract with a county gov agency...
Department head and I were discussing the addition of 2 more coders...
    I said...
"Bill how's about I go over to the Jr College and ask my old teacher"
    He replied...
No, we have to have masters degree or better...
    I says
"You mean like these Chinese and Indian folks "
(I found them difficult, unwilling to listen)
    He says...
    Ahhh, No, No, No, Uh....
    So
    I says
"Bill you do know that I don't even have a GED, right?"
    He replied
But you have a performance record preceeding you...
"Bill all I'm saying is why are all these people going to Jr. College if no one will give the a break,,,
    And they speak American
    And
Their Visas won't ever be an issue"
    Jeez Bill..

You think it's tough in the States, how about, I have a British Safety Council diploma in Safety Management something that took over £7,000 to obtain and training over one and a half years, In the UK we have thing's called Skill's Cards (probably the same as your talking about)
Most Companies will not let you on to a Construction Site without one of these which is all well and good but they only recognise certain qualifications to do certain work which again is all well and good, however, If I tell you they couldn't give me a card to carry out H&S inspections because I didn't belong to a certain H&S Institute you would think I was lying but sadly it's true.
When I questioned why they couldn't issue a card to a professionally qualified H&S practitioner they couldn't come up with an answer, so the answer is that it is all designed to sell H&S courses as I discovered by a little digging that the competent authority for issuing these card's is, wait for it, a private limited company!
Funny old world ain't it! and bluddy pleased to e retired out of it! Sorry guy's rant over, back to smiley's and another large red wine, Cheer's:D

I’m a millwright at Ford Motor Company. I work in our construction group. We work side by side with outside contractors. Ford safety standards are higher than OSHA. The job is much safer today than it was when I started 22 years ago but some of the newer safety rules tend to be over the top and make the job harder.

It's amazing how many people won't even wear safety glasses. Well don't try crying workers comp if you aren't wearing your PPE . The other amazing one is scaffolding. No sooner than it gets put up and all safeties up people want to dismantle all the safety stuff because " it's in the way "

Doesn't sound that bad at least there's an end. I used to be in environmental claims. Lots, and lots of crap to get though with a Superfund site. All from a desk nowhere near it of course.

What is a ten hour card?

And why does OP need one?

Is it just a cerificate saying your got 10 hours of additionaly training or something?

I wouldnt worry about it OP, its probably meant for other guys who dont know how to do jack in or are lazy in some aspects. Im sure your good but its probably to filter out those who dont know how to do the job.
