    Happy New Gibson Day :thumb::cool:

So the story behind this guitar is reasonably straightforward...

In order to acquire another axe, some concessions had to be made (none that involved selling gear).

For about 2 weeks I waited for the new stock of Gibsons to arrive at my store, after talking to the new Aussie distributor regional rep.

I was present for the unboxing of the LP's, Explorers, Firebirds, SG's and a couple acoustics (presold)

Various specs, but the one that wooed me was a LP Classic goldtop with p90's and an action like butter.
    IMG_7778.JPG
went home to have a think about it. Spoke to SWMBO.... went back next day - SOLD.

Feeling defeated I had a play of a few, ignoring the SG's - there were simply too many new guitars being unboxed and ultimately the defeat propelled me home guitarless.

Get a call from store a few days later... hopes were up - I thought the guy's brought it back, but no. Instead, the Fender shipment for the month had arrived. inside were some lush elite series thinline tele's, some CS strats, some JM's and a couple Jag's, P-bases and Jazz Bases. Add a few Gretsch's and it was enough for me to roll down.

When I got there I see a beautiful 60th ann fiesta red Jazzmaster - I gravitated to it. wow. thought was this is coming home with me..... so I send a pic to SWMBO.... seeking approval in kind.
    IMG_7789.JPG
She's umming and arring.... so I send a pic of the new epiphones that were being unboxed.... inside a pelham blue with cream hardware Les Paul that was incredibly well finished and felt like a traditional LP (heavy) with a nice 60's neck.
    IMG_7810.JPG
nod of approval comes for Pelham Blue.... so I keep taking pics of the stuff we're unboxing..... a green gretsch 5422T - and that also gets the nod....

    IMG_7809.JPG
Getting close to closing time, I said I'd come down tomorrow with SWMBO, so she can try the ones she likes out.....

We arrive after lunch, walk in, get the 'nod' from the boss and walk down to the playing area, along the way I grab the pelham blue Epi LP and the green gretsch. Immediately she says the Epiphone is too heavy. - it goes back on the wall. I pick up the fiesta red 60th ann JM....

immediate nod of approval. But she likes the gretsch. then while playing, the gretsch develops a capacitance issue and the switchgear starts to play up. Unable to quieten it down, it goes back to the boss and he puts it in the setup rack for inspection.

the JM is there.... and :thumbd:

No dice. She gets up and walks over to the wall with all the Gibsons and Epiphones... I motion to the epi "1984" (hetfield's black explorer) model and she immediately dismisses it, and moves on to a TDN Casino.

She likes the casino, but then says - we already have a 335.... "but the 335's cherry" - no dice.

She picks up an SG standard.
It's "autumn shade" which is new-world-order gibson speak for a really pale tobacco burst.

brings it back and starts playing it. " I want this one" I'm "You sure? I thought you wanted the Fiesta red JM?"

"Na, I like the SG. It looks nice and feels nicer than the red one"

I take it up to the boss and he's " WTF? I thought you came down for the Fenders!" I just turned to SWMBO, and we all laughed.

    IMG_7803.JPG

Got it home and changed out the black tophats for the amber gibson historic ones I had hidden away.

2018's come with the poker chip in the bag with the case candy, but aren't fitted to the instrument as delivered.

I'm not an SG kinda guy, but the 61R/T pickups in this are sweeeeeeeeeeet as. They're not stupid high gain. They sound more like vintage PAF's than burstbuckers or 490/498's - I'm almost glad I didn't get the goldtop with the P90's.....

Happy NGD? yeah - It wasn't an intentional acquisition - so I'm warming to it, but because I'm not an SG guy, it's harder to "like" - if it were the Jazzmaster or perhaps even the LPB thinline tele that was there, it might have been a different story.
    IMG_7801.JPG
I've found my Ricky 360/12 too.... just after this was bought. it's 1700 miles away, and I'm heading up to see it in 2 weeks.
    Wish me luck.

So I'm a little confused. Is this your wife's guitar, or did you buy a guitar that you didn't want because your wife told you to?

Thanks for all the kind comments and compliments. SWMBO is happy and approves of the amber tophats as well.

So how it played out was, "I want a new guitar, I'm giving you the courtesy of notice" - which can occasionally precede a retort of disgust or agreement. 'approval in kind' without seeking or needing it, but for the sake of keeping the peace.

I went there for the Fiesta red Jazzmaster. but SWMBO was given the choice - and as it turns out, she has bought a guitar and not me, although I paid for it.

    Funny how that works.

the Ricky 360/12 is 8 days away. potentially. I hope. but 2 guitars in less than a month will see me take a huge hit. I'll have zero brownie points left until xmas.

I guess its actually a double edged sword having a partner that is willing to venture into a guitars store lol.

That SG is a stunner, if I ever own another Gibson it will be an SG.

    Happy NGD!

I’m still confused - though my significant other is still in the ‘I don’t understand why you need more than one guitar’ camp.... you’d think after 15 years she’d Have figured it out by now...

Does this mean you still get to buy the JM as the SG isn’t yours... or are you out of credits....

@JB74 So waait... she plays as well? Else why did she try out the guitars?

My Significant Other likes the sound of acoustics, followed by clean electrics, so that's what she goes by when deciding if she likes a guitar.
She doesn't get involved much in buying new stuff (unless we go to the store together, then she listens while I play).

As far as the "Why do you need more than one guitar and one amp?" goes, she gets it - and I don't even have more than one amp!
And she's fine with new guitars as long as there's enough money left for, you know, life... and I'm more stingy than she is, so that's not a problem.
Oh, and as long as there's room for the thing somewhere - and I get that - but 2 guitar stands ain't a problem either and I haven't even filled my first one yet.

Nice getting a back story about your and SWMBO's acquisition. That would have been fun just to be there for all the unveilings. Enjoy her/your new SG.

Hint: If you don't tell your SO about your purchase, there will be no orders to obey.
My wife has no idea how many guitars I have and unless it affects our (read: her) bottom line, could care less.

No I wasn't out of credits, because she still knows about my eternal flame for the 360/12 Ric. I've wanted one since I was a kid, but they are just so hard to find here in Australia and when they are available, usually they're abused or have expensive 'issues' needing attention.

But on Saturday afternoon just passed, I purchased a 6129T Sparkle Jet. the Ricky didn't pan out (see other thread).

Out of Gas and out of brownie points for a good long while.

She plays a little, not super frequently and also likes acoustics. Her "Purple Rain" Ibanez RG is her player and now the SG is hers. I guess this is the cost of keeping harmony in a relationship - It's no bother to me, except I would have preferred the (less expensive) 60th anniversary fista red Jazzmaster. It sounded absolutely fantastic and it played very smoothly - but it has to be said, not as well as the SG.

Her suggestion to put my historic amber top hats on... more like a request. I agreed because I don't like the black tophats on principle.

Oh it always is. I get the phonecall from the store manager when all of the monthly guitar shipments come in, not just the Gibson / Fender ones, but the ibanez, schecter, ESP, Jackson etc... It's great to see different and new stuff all the time, and the best bit is you get to see it straight out of the box before it's been checked over and 'set up'. It's a great way to witness trends in build quality and other playability factors.
