Happy New Gibson Day So the story behind this guitar is reasonably straightforward... In order to acquire another axe, some concessions had to be made (none that involved selling gear). For about 2 weeks I waited for the new stock of Gibsons to arrive at my store, after talking to the new Aussie distributor regional rep. I was present for the unboxing of the LP's, Explorers, Firebirds, SG's and a couple acoustics (presold) Various specs, but the one that wooed me was a LP Classic goldtop with p90's and an action like butter. went home to have a think about it. Spoke to SWMBO.... went back next day - SOLD. Feeling defeated I had a play of a few, ignoring the SG's - there were simply too many new guitars being unboxed and ultimately the defeat propelled me home guitarless. Get a call from store a few days later... hopes were up - I thought the guy's brought it back, but no. Instead, the Fender shipment for the month had arrived. inside were some lush elite series thinline tele's, some CS strats, some JM's and a couple Jag's, P-bases and Jazz Bases. Add a few Gretsch's and it was enough for me to roll down. When I got there I see a beautiful 60th ann fiesta red Jazzmaster - I gravitated to it. wow. thought was this is coming home with me..... so I send a pic to SWMBO.... seeking approval in kind. She's umming and arring.... so I send a pic of the new epiphones that were being unboxed.... inside a pelham blue with cream hardware Les Paul that was incredibly well finished and felt like a traditional LP (heavy) with a nice 60's neck. nod of approval comes for Pelham Blue.... so I keep taking pics of the stuff we're unboxing..... a green gretsch 5422T - and that also gets the nod.... Getting close to closing time, I said I'd come down tomorrow with SWMBO, so she can try the ones she likes out..... We arrive after lunch, walk in, get the 'nod' from the boss and walk down to the playing area, along the way I grab the pelham blue Epi LP and the green gretsch. Immediately she says the Epiphone is too heavy. - it goes back on the wall. I pick up the fiesta red 60th ann JM.... immediate nod of approval. But she likes the gretsch. then while playing, the gretsch develops a capacitance issue and the switchgear starts to play up. Unable to quieten it down, it goes back to the boss and he puts it in the setup rack for inspection. the JM is there.... and No dice. She gets up and walks over to the wall with all the Gibsons and Epiphones... I motion to the epi "1984" (hetfield's black explorer) model and she immediately dismisses it, and moves on to a TDN Casino. She likes the casino, but then says - we already have a 335.... "but the 335's cherry" - no dice. She picks up an SG standard. It's "autumn shade" which is new-world-order gibson speak for a really pale tobacco burst. brings it back and starts playing it. " I want this one" I'm "You sure? I thought you wanted the Fiesta red JM?" "Na, I like the SG. It looks nice and feels nicer than the red one" I take it up to the boss and he's " WTF? I thought you came down for the Fenders!" I just turned to SWMBO, and we all laughed. Got it home and changed out the black tophats for the amber gibson historic ones I had hidden away. 2018's come with the poker chip in the bag with the case candy, but aren't fitted to the instrument as delivered. I'm not an SG kinda guy, but the 61R/T pickups in this are sweeeeeeeeeeet as. They're not stupid high gain. They sound more like vintage PAF's than burstbuckers or 490/498's - I'm almost glad I didn't get the goldtop with the P90's..... Happy NGD? yeah - It wasn't an intentional acquisition - so I'm warming to it, but because I'm not an SG guy, it's harder to "like" - if it were the Jazzmaster or perhaps even the LPB thinline tele that was there, it might have been a different story. I've found my Ricky 360/12 too.... just after this was bought. it's 1700 miles away, and I'm heading up to see it in 2 weeks. Wish me luck.
