Thanks for your kind mention...but YOU did the work. Maybe later than you wanted, but it was your own effort to learn that turned the corner.

To you own credit, you understand a lot about music. Period.

    Understanding modes is simple.

    Count to seven.

    Intervals
    1234567
    CDEFGAB

    Chords
    I-ii-iii-IV-V-vi-vii°
    C-Dm-Em-F-G-Am-B dim.

    Modes
    1. The C major (Ionian) scale (C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C) goes with the I: major 7 chord (Cmaj7).
    2. The D Dorian mode (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D) ...
    3. The E Phrygian mode (E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E) ...
    4. The F Lydian mode (F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F) ...
    5. The G Mixolydian mode (G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G) ...
    6. The A Aeolian mode (A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A) ...
    7. The B Locrian mode (B-C-D-E-F-G-A-B)
    :D

So...you've got a Cmaj7. Intervals are1-3-5-7. What modes from the list above will work over this chord? Follow the numbers.

I agree, I have tried to over the years but everything he said just went over the top. I think now I am close to being able to at least hear what he is saying. It's like when you you hear someone speaking Spanish at speed, it is too fast even when you know some of it. Well I hope I've learned enough maybe to converse with him, and he is an absolute wealth of knowledge :).

    I don't get what you mean. :)

    It was a serious question.

    I'll ask a different one.

Am. ACE . The 6, 1, and 3 of the C major scale. Which modes from the list above are on the nose, (meaning work in perfect harmony)with an Am triad? Remember...follow the numbers. Don't look at the letters at first, look at the numerals identifying the intervals, chords, and modes. That's the key.
    ;)

Perhaps not with the same fluency, but you may be surprised at how much you've absorbed over the years, and how much of it has become a part of your understanding.

What if I only play major, minor, major and minor pent, and arpeggios? With some chromatic stuff for color?

The C Major Chord progression using major and minor 7ths, and half-diminshed.

    Cmaj7 1-3-5-7

Play The C Ionian, E Phrygian, G Mixolydian, and B Locrian.

    You'll get
    Cmaj7- CEGB 1-3-5-7
    Dm7 - DFAC 2-4-6-1
    Em7 - EGBD 3-5-7-2
    Fma7 - FACE 4-6-1-3
    Gmaj7 - GBDF 5-7-2-4
    Am7- ACEG 6-1-3-5
    Bm7b5 - BDFA 7-2-4-6

Glad you put that up. I finally looked this harmonized scale up to see if it worked like the others.

Truth is, if you hit chord tones on the changes and resolve to the tonic, you can play whatever you want in between. Anything in the chromatic scale.

Modes help with harmony. They're the building blocks for harmonized intervals. Even if you don't use it,it's pretty good to know. Then when it's time to play, forget all that and just play. It'll find its way in without thinking about it.

You are right here, no need to memorise all this stuff. I always successfully forget all the theory I know when I start to play :D
