Just looking to get a traditional strat. Don't read into that word traditional too much. Just single coil all around and a trem bar. Beyond that I don't know what I want. Doesn't have to be new.

For that kind of money, the world is your oyster.

I would try to find a new American standard for the money. A classic player 60's is also a good opción or a standard MIM if you are sure you'll change pickups at some point.

I would get the closed out American Standard.
GuitarCenter online has a few color choices left for $1000-$1100.

In this day and age it's a buyer's market - there's stuff I've bought off Ebay that would go on and of auction forever until the seller decided to finally go no reserve or dropped the BIN price to a reasonable price, and I've been picking up good stuff locally off Craigs left and right for the last few years, but I know lot's of folks have issues with any CL transaction, and for good reason. Going to some strangers house w/ cash in hand isn't for everybody.

A used AVRI 62, I really like those thin rosewood necks. I guess they call them American Vintage these days. You can pick those up for $1,200. You may have to look, but they are awesome guitars. I've always liked the little details of the (59) early 60's. The scratch guard screw between the middle and the neck pickup, and no truss rod screw on the headstock.

    Something like:

The Eric Johnson Guitars as mentioned are also a win win.

Another vote for the Eric Johnson. I love mine. I go the rosewood model with bound neck.

Go to a guitar store, play a bunch and find what speaks to you. With $1200, the used market is pretty much wide open. I WOULD not buy new, you can find quality used instruments for much less.

A lot of good advice here. Buying used is definitely the way to go. An EJ or an American Standard seem like the two obvious choices -- both are highly-regarded pro-level instruments that will serve you well for years. Play one of each if you can.

Also check out some different neck carves, and radius. Find something that is comfortable to your hand.

I love my 2012 Am Std with Fat 50's single coils...
