Well at least he "says" he's sorry about that "crappy" thing
    https://1069thefox.com/news/030030-eric-clapton-disgusted-by-past-racist-outburst/
I would never deny him his props for what he has done but I don't think he holds a candle to say... Rory Jimi SRV or Pagey (my personal favorite for blues) etc but that's my opinion. His playing is spot on correct notes but it doesn't and never has excited me at all so there's my opinion I would never say "Sucks" though in fact I wouldn't say it about anyone I would simply say "not my taste"

The Bluesbreakers album was what really inspired me to play guitar. I can respect Clapton for all he's accomplished, but there isn't much he's done since Bluesbreakers that I really dig.

Oh for sure ! I have vast respect for the man, do not be mistaken here !!!

See if you can download a "Cream Greatest Hits" album, & play it for your friend...Not only is it hit after hit after hit, it's dang-good-music too, that will live on for a long time.

Mr.Clapton has played quite a few times with Dr.John...These two-guys get on really well together IMO...Now here would be a record I'd like to see made by both-of-them...

Clapton is underappreciated by many...and with good reason, IMHO.
After "461 Ocean Boulevard", he pretty much sucked because his personal life went to Hades and his creativity hit a brick wall. He surfaced briefly with "Slowhand" and then went back under. I don't like the new "sound" he developed in the '80s...it sounds forced, plastic and phony.
But I still gotta give the man his props.
Have your buddy listen to early Bluesbreakers stuff, 461 OB, Layla, etc. Or, have him listen to the live version of "Further On Up The Road', one of his best and improvised jams ever. If your friend still doesn't get it after that, then just let it be. Because he never will.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like Ace, but I think Mr. Clapton wipes the floor with him. I mean there really is no comparing the two. They reside on different planets...

One of the things I greatly admire about "the clap" is his ability to find a tone and phrasing that suits the piece more often than making every song suit his playing. He's really evolved as a player and a person over the years and cast aside mistaken belief systems of the past.
