I will turn on my tube amp on one day and it will be virtually silent.

Turn it on two days later (same place, same outlet) and it buzzes like a king bee.

What's the deal? Dirty power? Cosmic Rays?

Absolutely. Some days I can't use my strats because of the damn buzzing. It's getting worse - I think there are noisier and noisier devices all round my home these days...

I hadn't thought of wi-fi and radio noise. It could be my neighbor surfing the web!

Yes... Some days are buzzier than others... Some days the tone is better than others... My set up is a bit of rat's nest... Sometimes it helps to move the wires around, getting them off of each other, and unplugging and plugging everything back in... In any case, it goes away when I play...

Or you use LED lights one day but not the other? Or a dimmer perhaps?

@Cerb ... There is a dimmer in my studio, and it controls a set of LED track lights.... but running it up and down has no effect on the buzz (on bad days).

Not day to day... morning to evening! In the morning all my amps have a mild buzz, but at night they're quiet. I've been all around the house turning off computers, battery chargers, lights, and anything else I can think of, but nothing yet has stopped the AM noise. One day I'll find the offending noise source!

I know this sounds "out there" like its coming from the Ancient Aliens guy with the hair, but there is actual science to back this up.

You may want to get a power conditioner. They are about a hundred to a hundred and fifty bucks. I have the same problem in my practice room. I will be getting one. My buddy at the music store had the same problem and he said that the power conditioner fixed it. Let us know how it goes for you if you get one.

Noise and great tone take turns showing up randomly, then leaving me like like a jilted lover.

We live in a world filled with 60 cycle buzz.

    From my old teacher:

Next, be aware of distracting noises in the environment. We live in a world of 60 cycle hum. The electricity in all of our walls is humming away, producing a pitch somewhere between b-flat and b-natural. If there is an air conditioner of refrigerator nearby, the sound can influence everything you play. You can be severely out of tune with the refrigerator and easily misdiagnose the problem as a fault of a tin ear or lack of talent.

    Or an amp buzzing. :D

Tubes amps are humming, noisy and rough. Yes, they do get hot and nasty.
They are loud and kickass while turned up.
That is why we love them.

    Play it loud,
    Robin

Ummm, this is an obvious point I have never thought of. It's none too easy for me to hear pitches right and sometimes harder than others. Very interesting idea.
