On Midnight Oil’s recent tour, Jim Moginie was playing an 8-string tenor. I can’t seem to find these on the web for sale

It could easily be a custom, but does anyone know if this is a regularly manufactured instrument from somewhere?

I think its called a mandocello or maybe a mandola or something like that. Its part of the mandolin family I believe.

Edit: or maybe not appears Martin has made some maybe they are custom not sure.

Yeah, I specifically want a tenor guitar because the mandolae don't really have a guitar timbre. Oh well. It may be an unrealized dream.

Very helpful! Looks like Guitar Bodied Mandocellos are more common, and tuned a fifth lower. That's a starting point.

On the other hand, since the range of an octave mandolin goes as high as a guitar (both are tuned E4 on the high string), perhaps I just want a 12-string guitar.

Hit a local store and found a 12-string to absolutely fall in love with.

So, um... anyone want to give me $500?
