I just have Reaper, and old Alesis iO2 (M-Audio) interface, an M-Audio MIDI keyboard and monitors. With a few plugins and my guitars, it does what I need.

What do you mean with 'must have'?

For serious recording my only must have is a propper room. A room/enviroment suited for recording is the most important factor in a good session, right after being prepared and well rehearsed!

In the few cases I get to take part in the process of mixing, recording and programming I prefer Ableton Live(Got the full Suite), RME soundcards and two sets of monitors, one of them being one Avantone Mixcube for reliable mono listening, the other should be stereo, as full ranged and hi quality as possible and suited to the room in question.

A decent preamp, and a good mic or two per channel or a decent DI box.

My object of lust for 2019 is the Line6 HXstomp. Seems to be a real swiss army knife, add the Eventide MixingLink (micpreamp/DI/fx loop) and you got an amazing portable Recording rig in just two pedals and a laptop.

Everything is hardware up until it hits Sound Forge for mixdown, editing.

I've tried several "in the box" systems (ProToolz, CEP, Audition, etc) but I always am more comfortable, and therefore more productive, with a traditional standalone hardware multitrack.
That said, I am really happy in SoundForge when editing, etc the 2 tracks.

You know, I agree with what everyone is saying about what they have and what they want for optimal production but I also very firmly believe that if Butch Vig and whatever band he was working with had their car break down outside my house and knocked on the door and said, "We have to have an album in 2 weeks!!" that they could come in my ****ty room, use my ****ty mics and my decent other gear and make an album.

Yes. I interpreted "must have" literally :) but I guess Reaper isn't a must. Any other DAW would do.
