I stumbled upon music meditation at 14 while being drunk *****ed at by my father.
Started playing a repetitive open stringed rif over and over and everything just faded away.

Meditation is based on the premise of concentrating on one thing whether its a word a burning candle a sound. Try something see if it works. No thunderous shredding involved.
    Good luck

Years of practice and getting out of the Western mindset where everything is a goal.

    Is this Zen?
    Yes.
    This is not Zen.

Me, I love a good paradox : the goal is to get out of the goal-oriented mindset
(and it brings us back to "Doe, a deer", etc.... )

finding the difference between everything and nothing is sort of tricky.

I found going real fast over very rough terrain required being able shut everything off.

I have read 50 books and tried 50 practices and my monkey mind still dominates. Just too damned jumpy to manage it. It would do me good, but it does not happen.

Yes, and for me the elliptical machine and ice fishing.

When I ice fish, I'll go out with a group but generally stay inside my shelter. They're outside drinking beer, standing around the fire (on the ice when its thick enough or in an old 55 gallon drum someone drags out there with their snowmobile or ATV).

There are days I don't wear a watch and only have my handheld VHF (no iPhone), and other than noticing the changing position of the sun I don't really register the passage of time.

Took my ex-fiancé out ice fishing, and after 5 minutes she was like "This is it? The way you talked about it we'd be catching perch right and left."

Well, sometimes when you're on a school its like that, but mostly its waiting.

This is the method I use.

I don't ice fish since we don't have ice but when I do one of the more sedentary fishing techniques, I am close to meditation. I catfish from the bank with 3 or 4 poles out, all in holders and just sit and watch the poles.......

@Dadocaster Yeah, its very much like that.

I've catfished at night, and there are more distractions than sitting in a dark shanty looking into the hole watching your small float (perch fishing)- with the ice on the lake the water gets so clear you can see 20-30 feet down sometimes.

Walleye fishing is more like jigging. Swedish pimple with a minnow, jig up and down in the water column then shake the rod tip rapidly from side to side to give the lure a shimmer.

Steelhead (lake run rainbow trout) is pretty much the same.
