I am thankful for Omar. Gets me excited just reading the questions he asks.
So am I brother...
he asks great questions.
super interesting thread... i'd be more involved but part of being able to be here at all is limiting myself to jams, challenges and dereliction of duty... but i am learning from yous guys...
But this happened today... local rag ran this poem of mine
last two posts fall under dereliction of duty...
The challenges were great when it was pure improv. Once it became multiple takes, duets, and reworkings, it became Snoozesville for me...the seat of the pants, one take warts and all aspect is what made it interesting.
I took part in the last one because Omar asked specifically. I did it the way I used to: one listen, one take, warts and all. No overdubs, no multitracking. I did speed it up because it was terribly slow.
that's how i do mine (although i do sometimes do more than one take with a different guitar, or dissatisfaaction, or feel like it) - but funny how we get such different results... i'm guessing that comes down to being "on the same path" but a appreciably different locations!
participation is high these days, but in a way that's limiting because listening and commenting on twenty takes is more than i can really handle due to work etc... hard to expect people to listen to me if i'm not returning the favor...
all i have ever done has been one take. there were a few that were NOT done on the first take, but i said so, and you can better believe they were done on the second or third....and with no hanky panky.....you know im a idiot when it comes to recording. plus, im sure you could tell if there were any....whatever its called when people dont record it in one take.
i do have to say though.....whatever is happening now is a great way for people to learn and i have nothing against it. i just like it the way it was.
On the occasions that I participate, it's third time trying to play the stuff, all one take, no overdubs and I try not to listen to the other postings until I have completed mine. I break that last rule if I am totally lost.
It sure helps me.
im with you on the dont listen till youve done yours thing.
If I like it, I hit the like button.
I used to enjoy the discussion. I do find it kinda empty to comment on something with a blanket atta boy. I ain't Thumper. LOL
thats why i quit commenting. i felt like i wasnt being sincere.
and i dont like not being sincere. but i do listen to all the takes.
see that's the part i don't like... the atta boys... fortunately, before my 11 week break and since, I don't get too many of those any more lol - mostly just Simon (perhaps the most civil and kind man alive) cheering me on... but i don't offer atta boys... or critique... i just try to take it in the spirit offered and, when i can, give a few sentences about how it landed in my world... i'm in no position to be critical... that would be rich - worst player of the bunch telling other people how to improve! well it could be funny, i guess... "more stacked fourths. stat!"
ya see, you think youre the worst player of the bunch...youre not. i think the same way, like i have no business saying this or that....like button. being a musician is bittersweet.
about 3 years ago, i decided i badly needed a telecaster. a good friend from various art projects gave me a long look and then said... "i'm so sorry, they almost always bring a person trouble. a telecaster is the last thing i'd wish on anyone"
yeah, well...the satan thing.....
Ah, that's not always true! my first electric was a Tele, I've had several since, and they all were good luck for me.
