So went to GC to buy my 12 year old son a guitar. He wants to take lessons and learn to play after messing around 5 years ago with a mini Strat he got for Christmas.

So we were looking at getting him a Martin OOO 15M. I wanted to get him a good guitar that was easy to play and one that if he gave up I would like to have in addition to my OM 21. He liked the 15M we tried and it was nice but it’s voice was not very complex and lacked overtones I hear from my Martin and others I’ve played. While we were there they had a OMJM, the John Mayer signature model. Now I do not really care one bit about Mayer and really have never heard but maybe one song of his on the radio once but the guitar was so nice looking I asked them to open the glass case and get it out for me.

Well not only did it look spectacular, solid Engelmann Spruce top and East Indian rosewood two piece back and East Indian rosewood sides, ebony board and bridge, MOP inlays and abalone rosette, but it sounded like a choir of angels singing when I played it. So in the end my son is now rocking my/his OM 21 and I will be picking up the OMJM Tuesday when they get a brand new one delivered for me and I will post pics then.

Wow, that’s a wonderful, and beautiful guitar! Enjoy it!

Make sure you play the new one before buying, you just might prefer the tone of the one you already played. You know, they aren’t always the same.

I like Engleman spruce tops too.

I definitely will but the one there has several swirls and small scratches so for that price I’m really wanting a new one but if it doesn’t play as nice I will take the one I played today.

A $3500+ first guitar for a 12 year old?
Not sure I would have the guts to do that but I hope it works out well and gets him on his way to a lifetime of enjoyment!

The OMJM is not for him, it’s for me. He’s getting my OM 21.

Cool guitar, and very jealous that your son is learning on such a nice guitar - played one at my local guitar store and actually ended up making the opposite decision to you, and I walked out with a 000-15m (price was a factor).

Piece of serious advice: you may not be in to John Mayer, but I'd recommend getting your son into him if you want him to get into guitar (especially if he's playing a Martin!) When I was first learning I was also just starting to listen to him, and although his songs may not be the greatest and he gets a lot of stick for his poppiness they are really well composed and learning them was a great gateway to improving my technique and learning new chords and voicings, as well as fingerpicking and slap picking.

I'm firmly in the Martin guitar camp, grew up playing my dad's D28 and never looked back:

Wow my luck continues. Guitar arrives at my store tomorrow and this morning I get an email coupon from GC for 15% off and Martin is not one of the excluded companies! Now I won't get a full 15% because it is capped at $500 max but still $500 off is pretty darn sweet!

It's refreshing to hear that a beginner is going to start off on a nice guitar.
They are so much more likely to stick with it if it's a pleasure to play on.
    I think anyway.

That is one of the best sounding production model Martin’s, imo. Great choice, and congrats!

Picked up the OMJM at lunch today. Couldn't go yesterday as my office was doing our annual service project and building a deck, stairs and wheel chair ramp off of one of the buildings at a Boy Scout camp nearby. I will take pics and upload tonight when I get home. It's sitting in the case beside my desk right now and keeps calling out to me to play it. Must resist urge to take off work early
