Today I decided to do the last big upgrade of my tele and striped the finish from the front, dyed it blue and made the old barn door look. Finished with 6 coats of Tru Oil and and after 6 hours it is back, screwed and stringed:

Very nice. I was thinking of doing something similar to my trans-red Tele.

Its hard to get rid of glossy poly finish, I have seen threads in forums where people are showing how ridiculously thick is that finish. You need something stronger than sandpaper, start with knife and finish with axe :)

That's how I got from this:
    2012-10-07 09.16.08.jpg

    to this ...

    2012-10-07 12.48.37.jpg

    and then finally, this ... 2013-10-25 07.08.05 copy.jpg

All the result of accidental mangling when trying to get that super thick finish off. I think I made the best of a bad situation ... it's got a Blade Runner bridge/vibrato, Seymour Duncan Antiquity Texas pick-ups/assembly, and a V-Neck from a Strat American Deluxe. Quite a costly but awesome Frankenstrat!

@Twang Banger great job, how long did it take to remove everything from the body? In my case it was easy, the body had some 10 coats of tru oil and it took literaly 30 seconds with sanding machine to remove everything.

I went the sandpaper route on my LTD that looked like it was dipped in poly. It took a couple nights and was enough to turn me off refinishing guitars for awhile if not forever!

Started sanding while guitar was still assembled just to see how thick the poly coating really was...disassembled and completed the job right after this pic:

Looks really nice I like it. I don't know why but first thing that came to mind when I saw it is "Washed Blue Jeans" type of colour.

Hours. Heat gun, scraper, etc. ... It felt like I was peeling a layer of fiberglass off of a boat hull or something! The process gouged and scraped the wood pretty badly, which is why I just tried to make the best of it afterwards by sanding the roughest spots out, putting on a Wudtone stain and then a little bit of Tru-Oil.
