We're playing our first fair/carnival today for West Fest 6-8pm at Medella Vina Ranch here in Tucson, AZ. 2 sets. Pretty excited.. We're used to small stages at bars we play at, this will be fun. I just have to watch my swearing haha.... Then we play tomorrow night at Brodie's Tavern, 11:30pm show.

I want to hear cool carnival/fair stories!!!

I was in a band once and one guy in the band Josh wanted to play out more, so he put on a music festival here in Seattle, just so we could play it. He was very resourceful.

that's awesome!!! I emailed a charity here in town to do a charity concert... I told them I'll hire all the bands, provide all the equipment... you just have to find us a venue and take in all the money that comes in... they're pretty excited

One of the last gigs I played was in a marquee, on New Years Eve. It was freezing and snowed in the run up to midnight.

Is it specifically a music festival?

We played my town's carnival one year and I swore never again. We had to play for free and only a stage was provided...no PA so we had to bring our own. No promotion of the bands except for a banner across the front of the stage listing every single act over the 1 week period...and they mispelled my name!! It was hot as heck.

None of this would have mattered if we had an enthusiast crowd to play to. Over the 2 hours we played, 4 or 5 people came by. Oh, and we got yelled at for language...I think the singer said he11.

My town has money to build some absurd stadium for the high school football team, but can't pay a token $100 or $200 to each band that plays. My town doesn't seem to care about music...yet the high school has a state of the art recording/performance studio and the music program is well funded. I sure as heck can't figure it all out :).

Nope, never again, not there anyway :).

The next town over does an Oktoberfest street festival...that was fun! Another town would have a carnival fundraiser and would have a beer tent. That was cool because the beer drinkers were a captive audience...couldn't leave the area with your beer.

Anyway...best of luck with the festival! Great that you have a steam of steady gigs. Keeps the band's energy up.

Sounds like you guys have a go getter for booking. Thats almost better than actually being able to play.

I think the OP is the go getter himself :).

Not having gigs on the calendar is the quickest way to drain positive energy out of a band.

yeah it's all me... I do everything, website, merch, promoting, write all of the songs, practice place is at my house, I bought a van for us, everything... I don't mind it though, I was business minded far before I picked up music... I do love the music 1000000 times more than the business though, the business is starting to get annoying

I played a Fireworks/4th of July show in Kansas City many years ago. It was my first big show.

I know I was there, and I know I played it, but I have absolutely zero recollection of any of it. Zero.

I hope I didn't do anything embarrassing... or criminal.

Best of luck, knock 'em dead!

Maybe not so funny, but true. I never thought about this until you asked. We played many gigs over the next year and never once spoke about the 4th of July show. Never. Maybe I shouldn't have brought it up.
