Im from Sweden so bear with me on my English. o_O

Its my father inlaws bandmates old guitar that been hanging on the wall for 25 years and I'm thinking of buying it.

The guitar was bought in the early 70s already refinished. I have pictures confirming it

Whats been done over the years:

-Instead of the original 3way switch he had 3 single on/off switches. One for each pickup. Leaving 3 ugly holes in the pickguard

-The volume pot has been changed and some of the wires.

-Refinished in a ugly sunburst sometime before 1973.

Everything else seems to check out. Ive done a blacklight test och the neck and the hardware looks good and "right"

My big question is if its maybe a burgundy mist lying underneath the ugly sunburst? As you can see in the routing area and neck pocket area the old finish is visible and in some finish cracks on the body you can see a sandwich of white, burgundy, white and thick layer och black/brown.
I dont know if its been oversprayed prior to the sunburst finish and maybe its a olympic white from the beginning?

the writing in the neck pocket says "dont paint" in swedish and its over the clearcoat (tried to wipe it with a cottonswab and denatured alcohol and the blue ink comes of not the clearcoat)

The serial is 70369 (if i remember correctly) and pots dates 304-6207 and neck 11/62

What do you fine people think? :thumbd::)

People pay crazy prices for these. Not sure what the "value" it is after being refinished. Is the entire guitar original? What do they have it listed for (in American dollars)? I have no answers, only questions?

Didn't we see this recently in another thread? I remember @Guy Named Sue translating the writing in the neck pocket.

This detail is not correct for a 1962 body. So either it's not a 62 body, or it's been repaired wrong??

Other experts will chime in, I'm sure!

Could it be some type of thin wood piece glued there to fix a sloppy routed neck pocket?

Now with this new picture I can see it says Att Ej Målas. But the meaning is basically the same, that it shouldn't be painted. Odd message in such neck pocket.

An 11/62 neck should have a stamped date and a veneer board, not a slab.

What @Bazz Jass pointed out was that the corner of the neck pocket is square and it should never be that way on a strat. It should be a slope, rounded off.

Oh look at that! Nice somebody already asked about it! I know 2 people have looked at it before me but some things didn't match up. Im trying to find out what it really is.

If the decal was put over the nitro its most def a overspray on the neck.

Whats really weird is the patent number on the decal puts it in 1961 and the L stamp on the neck heel and writing looks like 61.

Note: The refin is VERY thick.

Yep. Very early ones (1954 for eg) were squared off, but not by the 60s...

I really really want to strip the finish. Is there a possibility that the first white layer is the OG finish?

One thought I have is Maybe the neck date is written like : II - 62? February 62. That would make sense with the late 61 markings and Patentnumber puts it in late 61 and pots says 6207. 7th week of 62?

I'd walk away, (actually if I could, I would run). Too many inconsistencies.

Difficult to see from the picture but logos under blacklight usually show show some contrast between the headstock and the logo edges and the " fender " part is much darker.

Yeah thats true! The neck has most def. been over sprayed because the logo is under the finish.

Well that would make it the first and probably only neck to come out of Fender dated like that.
