I think we're all creative but we need to learn how to let it out. You may be the most talanted painter in the world but if no one teaches you how to dip the brush in the paint before you put it to the canvas, all those pretty pictures in your head will be locked up forever.

If you sing, whistle or hum away from the instrument, then you are creating something directly from your mind. Practice creating melodies away from the instrument. Then try to replicate them on the instrument.

We all have music in us. It's just about finding a way to get it out.

Frankly, I believe that if you cannot conceive some art project in your mind first, you cannot make it real. It exists in the realm of concept, then your technique, be it the pen, dance, music, painting, etc., is just the means to realize what has already been conceptionalized.

I tried a bit of soloing today. Trainwreck. But it's moving forward ever so slowly so I'm happy.

Here's a hint. When basing solo work off arpeggios, only base them off the circle chords. Ignore the passing chords.

    Dm7, G7, Cmaj7, Fmaj7, Bm7b5, E7, Am7/A7.

These fall on the 1 of each measure.

You can take it further and just focus on Dm7, Cmaj7, Bm7b5, and Am7. ;)

    Good short-cut advice.

any other chords can be added later - or not at all.

    So that's only 2 chords with notes outside C - E7 (the G#) and A7 (the C#).

I think I'll try to stay with all the circle chords but simplify within them.

In my head I can hear exactly what I want to play for the solo but my fingers don't find the note on the fly.

I agree that someone can show you how to dip the brush into the paint, and even how to apply the paint to the canvas in a million ways, but I do not believe anyone can teach you to paint what you have in your head. I may be wrong, but its what I believe.
I mean, people can say things like, "dont look at the finger....look at the moon" to help you have some sort of spiritual thing or something like that, but ultimately its up to you to get it out.

You can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but can not know how to get there. A guide can show you the way who has taken the journey before.

The finger and moon thing is about focus. Can't see the forest because you're too focused on individual trees. Or the leaves on the tree.

It's wide angle, big picture thinking. :)
