PRS as a LP replacement: Great, but not what I was expecting. Other options?

They do. One thing though. Do you like their necks? All of the guitars have the same thin U profile neck. I had a M-10 and while I’d recommend it to anyone you have to love their neck profile, because all their guitars come with it

I've played a LTD Iron Cross (Hetfield signature Eclipse, MIK, retail for about $1k) and it was very nice; ebony board, HetSet EMGs, very easy to play guitar. I can only imagine the MIJ ones would be in a whole other league for what they charge for them.

I believe the Ibanez Jem comes in Alder. I have an Ibanez J-custom, which is very similar, but in Mahogany with maple top. The sound is very different though

So the PRS meets the first two, but not the sustain. Is sustain really that important? Do you want to hold every note for 10 seconds? :p I can honestly say the sustain of an instrument has never really bothered me. Of course, we may be playing totally different styles of music! :)

Sustain is important to me. I don't want to hold every note for ten seconds (some I want to hold for 15 seconds lol), but if a guitar has little or no sustain, like way less than average, that is a deal breaker for me.

    My house.
Santana plays PRS and his tone is not very Les Paulish.

I have a hard time reconciling PRS and Les Paul tones.

I bought a PRS 245se and returned it. It sounded terrible. Maybe it was a lemon.

It seems like PRS is really scooped in the mids. Bassy and some treble but not much mids. I dunno, maybe it was a lemon.

For bucker guitar with belly cut I once played a Brian .....cant remember the last name guitars.

Gibson issued a thinner cut guitar Les Paul Less in 2015 and a Les Paul custom thats thinner too. Both with belly cuts.

Wish I could remember the Brian.....guitar.

    :)

Yeah, the length of the sustain after 1 sec is not that important for me... I'm referring to the sustain that happens before that. In other words, the way the guitar reacts to the note played is much different and very unique to the Les Pauls...
    It feels much "fuller".

My local Guitar Center has these 2018 Gibson High Performance models.

    Pros:
I didn't play them much because they were right handed (I'm lefty), but they did feel a lot more comfortable than my 2009 LP Traditional which I have since 2009.
I love the new access heel cut. While the access to the 22nd fret is not as good as the Ibanez Prestige, it is 1,000x better than any other traditional LP.

    Cons:
I'm not sure how I feel about not having the pickup rings... It just feels something is missing.
Also, the sunburst looks incomplete. Look at the bottom of the guitar. It looks half-done. On the far right, you'll see the regular Gibson Standards... they look much better, at least to my eyes
I have no idea why in heck they think this guitar is worth $3,829. Is it a custom shop? no. Is it that much better than a $2,800 Les Paul Standard? No (not sure why even the LP Std costs $2800 anyway).
