And to think it’s amazing how heavy some Les Pauls are.

Ok, so I admit to sitting here and watching that for longer than I should have. Precession is an odd thing and that’s a cool example of it.

I'm sitting in class at San Francisco...
Out of professor's face comes this sound...
    "Best guess is"
I hold up my hand and say...
    "Could you repeat that please"
    She says

Great shot. Obviously a composite though.

Ah, I'd figured it was simply a long exposure. The APOD page doesn't describe the photo technique for this one, which they sometimes do.

It is colorful. Credited to a private photographer, so I don't think it's one of those NASA-style composites where they superimpose visible-light imaging with false-color IR & X-ray.

The horizon looks decidedly unnatural but I think I assumed that was because it's strongly backlit. Looks like city glow out-of-frame to the left and moon just about to rise on the right.

How would you think it was done - one image of the starfield and another for the meteor trails?

He's on an equitorial mount at least, and the foreground is a different shot superimposed, otherwise the horizon would be blurred. A bunch of exposures stacked and layered in post. I'd bet he's also using a filter on some of the shots to highly the red hydrogen clouds.

And there may be super massive black holes at the center of each one of them. Scary!
