Good point. Tokais had cap boards, but AVRIs & all the Fender Japan 62 type Strat things had slab boards.

The tuners are modern relic repros, period. Found out Guitar Mill also does veneer boards. The spider web finish checking makes me think it might one of theirs. Or maybe its one of those strats.

Do they make 'fake' pots? Can't remember seeing any.

Overall I'd say it's too rusty. Saddles don't get rusty usually-- they turn black. And they turn black more on the bass side than the treble side.

You can also get a magnet and see if the jack cup is magnetic. If it is, it's made of steel, which means it is modern. The old ones were chromed brass. The precbs guys use a brass repro one but I doubt many do.

Might be wrong, but I think it's a really thorough relic. Maybe the guy you know bought it thinking it was real.

    The body is fake.

    - I don't see any tooling marks in the cavity
    - The trem cavity looks all wrong. Too small and in too much in the middle
    - Neck plate numbers are too thin

And the rest as said above, But i do think the neck is legit. The only thing that is real with the pots and switch..
