1989 Custom Shop Strat.jpg 1989 Custom Shop Strat 2.jpg I am looking at what is purported to be a 1989 Signature Series Custom Shop Strat, with a serial number of SE 921176 on the back of the headstock, along with the "Custom Shop" and "USA" logo. I have searched the Fender database, and I cannot find any information regarding this serial number. The tuners are locking tuners, and the nut is a roller nut. The guitar has an HSS pickup configuration. I have only seen pictures, so I can't provide much more info. Can anyone help me to verify what this guitar is?
    Thanks, Tom

Welcome to the forum Tom @tweeker1

Please show us those pictures, we can't help based on verbal descriptions....it could even be fake/counterfeit....

SE were usually signature/artist models...so this is odd....

Fender records go back to 1993 only. Post pics, we will help.

Sounds like a Deluxe model but we need pictures to be sure.

Sorry to say it's not Custom Shop, that decal is fake. The body isn't Fender but the neck is and probably also the pickups.

I dont think we should jump to those conclusions so fast with out seeing the insides. I dont see any real red flags pointing to a fake body or decal

So maybe I'll have to take off the neck, and check serial numbers, etc.? Before I start taking apart someone else's guitar, are there any more thoughts on this guitar's provenance or authenticity?

There won't be any serial numbers or anything that matches the neck serial in the neck pocket or on the body.....

I think it's authentic I just don't know what model it is.....it could be from about 1992 also, not necessarily 1989.....SE92 serials were on the first SRV Strats and those came out in 1992.....

    Couldnt find a model name.
I have seen custom shops similar to this. They are close to the fender CS 35th anniversary stratocaster.

do you know if it is a Set neck or not?

Fender had a run of set necks that look like the one you posted sometime in the 90s.

Search "Fender Custom Shop Set Neck Stratocaster FMT Ultra"

or if you are looking for the Quilt version replace FMT with QMT and have a look.

They made a fender contemporary stratocaster set neck model starting in 92.

Thanks for the input; I really appreciate it! I am concerned about Guy Named Sue's immediate assessment that this is not a legitimate Custom Shop guitar. Hmmmm... I have asked the seller if they have the Fender Certificate of Authenticity, but have not heard back on that. I am able to go and see the guitar, as it is only a short drive away. Assuming that the seller does not have that Fender Certificate, are there any other specific things that I should look for to confirm its authenticity when I physically inspect this guitar, without disassembling it? The asking price is $1,750, which seems like a really good deal, if the guitar is a legitimate Custom Shop Strat. I am not a Strat afficionado, though I do own a 2008 American Deluxe Strat. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I apologise for that, I was a little too quick to assess. I have not seen these guitars before today, I trust the judgment of the other guys that have posted.

Thanks! I did the search as you suggested, and the results sure look like the pics that I have been given.

Do you have a photo of the back of the guitar where the neck meets the body...to know if it's a glued in set neck or a bolt on neck?

Thanks, Sue; I appreciate the update, and your deference to others' opinions on this matter. It never hurts to be somewhat skeptical about authenticity when looking at higher end guitars, which is why I started this threat. Thanks again.

that is what I thought the moment I looked at it.

If it is one of the CS set necks. the price you have been quoted is AMAZING in my opinion.

sure its not a strat for one of those insane "purists" but that is just fine with me.
