Surprised this wasn't on the list. Utterly wonderful and heart-breaking at the same time.

Lots of omissions. I'd rank Dylan's Don't Think Twice it's Alright and It Ain't Me Babe both above the song they picked. Patsy Cline's Crazy. Willie Nelson's Whisky River, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.

    But my favorite:

And I honestly like CCR's version of Heard It Through the Grapevine better than Marvin Gaye's. And Cake's version of I Will Survive better than Gloria Gainor--but I will grant that those songs are solidly good breakup songs if anyone performs them well.

I will grant that this song makes me want to cry. But not because it's one of the "greatest" songs. Ew.

Surely this is one of the best break up songs...even if you didn't break up, it makes you feel like you just got dumped.

The Kelly Clarkston "since U been gone" is good, but the Russ Ballard song by the same title is 40x better:

The Brian May Band - Since You've Been Gone

Thinking again about this thread (which I started) makes me realise afresh how fortunate we were in the UK that bands here covered such great US tracks, sending us back to the originals. Here's another, this time the cover version by the great Steve Winwood.
